An acoustic wave sensor is an electromechanical device which depends on the modulation of an acoustic wave to sense any physical stimulus. Acoustic wave sensors are highly sensitive to any disturbance or change to the surface. The acoustic wave sensors family consists of surface acoustic wave (SAW), shear horizontal surface acoustic wave (SH SAW), shear horizontal acoustic plate mode (SH APM), flexural plate wave (FPW) or Lamb wave mode, and thickness shear mode (TSM) devices. If the wave travels on the surface of the substrate, it is known as a surface wave. The commonly used wave devices are the surface acoustic wave sensors. When the acoustic wave propagates through any surface, a change in the characteristics of the propagation path results in alterations in the amplitude, frequency, or velocity of the wave. This change can be monitored by measuring the phase characteristics of the sensors and compared to the corresponding physical quantity being measured. Acoustic wave sensors function mostly in gaseous and vacuum mediums and a fraction of them can operate when in contact with liquids. These sensors use the phenomenon of piezoelectric effect in their operation. The most commonly used acoustic wave device is the thickness shear mode resonator (TSM). The TSM typically consists of a thin disc of quartz with parallel circular electrodes patterned on both sides. When a voltage is applied across these electrodes, it results in the shear deformation of the crystal. The crystal resonates as electromechanical standing waves are created and hence the name. The displacement is maximized at the crystal surfaces which makes the device sensitive to surface stimulus.

Low manufacturing cost associated with the sensors and its wireless nature are the main factors propelling the growth for the acoustic wave sensor market. The requirement of SAW is significant in the automotive industry and hence this is the also a major growth driver. SAW sensors are used extensively for security and surveillance purpose. The requirement for resonator sensors is prominent in the automotive industry for keyless entry and tire pressure monitoring as the resonators are not altered by fluctuations in source and circuit voltage. Various technical issues associated with energy consumption and sensitivities of acoustic wave sensors can hamper the growth of this market. Nevertheless, the market is expected to experience a encouraging growth during the forecast period.

The acoustic wave sensor market has been segmented on the basis of type, by device type, by industry vertical, by sensing parameter, and geography. Based on type, the market has been divided into Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) Sensor and Bulk Acoustic Wave (BAW) Sensor.
