Polyhydroxybutyrates (PHBs) are members from a family of Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). PHB is a kind of thermoplastic polymer and is completely biodegradable. PHB is used in various end use industries such as pharmaceutical, food, agriculture, automotive, and others due to its good oxygen permeability, non-toxicity, water resistant, and biodegradability. PHB exhibits excellent stiffness and crystallinity, thus long fiber PHB is widely used in car interiors and other automotive parts. PHB find application in the development of implanted medical devices for orthopaedic, dental, hernioplastic, and skin surgeries. PHB based medical devices include biodegradable screws and plates for bone fixation, bioresorbable surgical sutures, wound covering, among others.
