Smart antennas are notably used in radio astronomy, radio telescopes; track and scan radar, acoustic signal processing and also used widely in cellular bandwidth systems such as universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS), long term evolution (LTE) and wideband code division multiplexing access (W-CDMA). Smart antennas offer the advantages of capacity enhancement, coverage extension, increased transmission efficiency, reduction of multipath fading and increased bandwidth among others. These antennas have two basic functions, namely: estimation of direction of arrival (DOA) and beam forming. Smart antenna systems recognize the DOA of a signal by using techniques such as multiple signal classification (MUSIC), matrix pencil method or estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT)

By technology, the market has been segmented into three segments, SIMO (Single Input Multiple Output), MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) and MISO (Single Input Multiple Output). Due to its higher spectral efficiency and link reliability or diversity, MIMO has evolved to be an important part of the modern wireless communication standards such as HSPA+ (3G), Long Term Evolution (4G), WiMax (4G) and IEEE 802.11n (WiFi). MIMO held the largest share of the market in 2014.

By types, these are classified as switched multibeam antenna and adaptive array antenna. In 2014, adaptive array antenna was the largest contributor to the market. Dominance of the market by adaptive array antenna is expected to continue during the forecast period. However, switched multibeam antenna is expected to grow significantly during the forecast period, switched beam antenna systems offer significant increase in capacity and coverage as compared to the conventional antenna based systems.
