04-30-2009 01:56 PM CET | Media & Telecommunications

Press release from: MultiMedia Satellite Services BV (M2sat)

24-04-09 - London – Amsterdam - Bremen - With the live streaming of two major sports event in April and May 2009 the M2sat Sport Streaming Season gets a flying start. The MPEG-4 based light satellite uplinking system M2sat SATstreamer is in full swing these days streaming an international horse dressage event in the German Hagen and right after that streaming a surfing event in the very north of Scotland. Visit our website www.m2sat.com to view the high quality live video streams!
The two sport events mark the start of the live streaming season for M2sat. Was the light satellite uplinking solution, under the name M2sat SNGstreamer, untill now mainly used for satellite news gathering and live local shows for TV channels. Under the name M2sat SATstreamer the system now provides a complete solution for the live streaming of events directly to IPTV channels on the internet.

Advantages of the system
Says Hub Urlings (M2sat gm): “We see in particular that organizers of international sport events for their sponsors have the need for a reliable video connection to provide a live video stream of the event to the internet, but they have to do this within a very strict and limited budget. That can be a challenge sometimes when you look at the locations were these international events are held. The M2sat SATstreamer meets that challenge. As satellite based solution it can be deployed at any location worldwide, is very easy to use and it comes at a price the is nearly half that of traditional satellite solutions.”

How does it work?
In both events the vehicle based M2sat SATstreamer rental unit is used that consist of a remote controlled rooftop antenna plus a flightcase that the video field crews can take out to the event. The video field crew can just plug in their camera and microphone and start the transmission. The SATstreamer solution is optimized for streaming into the internet. From the event location they stream their live video to the M2sat downlink system that is connected to a streaming video distribution platform.

What does it cost?
The total operational costs of the system are roughly half that of traditional MPEG-2 SNG-trucks.
M2sat can do that first of all because the MPEG-4 based system uses only half the satellite bandwidth of traditional satellite uplink effectively cutting satellite bandwidth, a major production cost, in half. Secondly we use cost effective and standard off the shelf VSAT and IP components that reduce the total system costs per day. Thirdly we designed the system so the uplink can be operated by a standard video field crew removing the need for a dedicated satcom engineer at the event location. The satellite part is all remote controlled and not their worry.

SATstreamer, an end to end solution
With the SATstreamer being an IP-solution, M2sat also takes care of the full end to end IP-video connection and of the connectivity to the streaming distribution servers of the customer or partners.
This means we not only take care of the satellite downlink system facilities but also of the IP-connectivity to the streaming distribution platform and beyond.

The satellite downlink we can provide via our own M2sat facilities or we can temporarely install a downlink system at the customer premise. For the IP-connectivity we take care of the connection to the customers streaming distribution server or alternatively M2sat can take care of the distribution of the IP-video stream onto the event website and the web as well.

Summary
To meet the challenge of providing cost effective live video reports from remote sports event locations the M2sat SATstreamer offers a reliable, cost effective light satellite uplink solution that can be operated by any video field crew.

In a time where the need for live event coverage grows but production budgets are tight, the SNGstreamer seems to provide all the right answers for organisers of international sport events that want to provide marketing value to their sponsors.
