Leonard Miller Principal Leadership Award To Honor Principals

The Council for Educational Change, a statewide nonprofit organization, is bringing together school leaders, business executives and philanthropists to celebrate the 15th Leonard Miller Principal Leadership Award at a recognition luncheon. The prestigious award will be presented to three principals who have participated in a Council program and demonstrated strong leadership skills and, as a result, have significantly improved the academic performance of their students.

The fundraising event will take place on Thursday, Nov. 16 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at Nova Southeastern University, Carl DeSantis Building 3301 College Avenue, Room 3000, Fort Lauderdale, FL. 33314. The ceremony will be emceed by Terence Shepherd, who is news director at WLRN News.

The luncheon is also an opportunity to recognize Publix Super Markets Charities, Inc. and Raymond James Financial for their strong support. Their generosity has helped the Council fulfill its mission, strengthening the leadership team of schools across the state by partnering principals with business executives. Under the Council’s executive mentoring programs, successful business leaders collaborate with school principals to develop strategies to meet school needs. They encourage students to graduate career-ready and equipped with the skills needed to fill thousands of unfilled job openings.

“The Council arranges the CEO/Principal partnerships, but the principals and the business executives are the real heroes,” said Council Chair Steve Wasserman, Executive Vice President of Colliers International South Florida. “Together, they assess school needs and challenges, and develop collaborative strategies to ensure that all students receive a quality education.”

Since it was created in 2001 by the late Leonard Miller, founder of Lennar Corp., the Council has served more than 5,000 school-based leaders in 885 schools across 67 districts and, as a result, touched the lives of 1.54 million students and 39,000 teachers. Mr. Miller believed that principal leadership is the catalyst to ignite school improvement. His leadership, vision and expertise inspired the Council’s Principal Leadership programs.

The Council is offering a limited number of sponsorship opportunities ranging from $5,000 to $2,000. Supporters can choose to buy an 8-seat table for $1,000 or individual seats for $150. For RSVP and more information call 954.727.9909.

“Supporting this event is a way to show a commitment to improving public education,” said Council’s Board Member Arthur Noriega, CEO of the Miami Parking Authority. “Principals have the tremendous responsibility of shaping our future workforce. But they can’t do all the work by themselves. They don’t work in a silo. They need the business community’s support and it is in our own best interest to get involved and help improve public education.”

Current event sponsors include Carnival Cruise Lines, Cobb Family Foundation and Richard & Susan Finkelstein.
