Electrosurgery is a surgery performed using high-frequency electric current to cut, coagulate, fulgurate, or desiccate tissues. With the use of electrosurgery, operating procedures can be carried out with the minimal loss of blood. Hence, electrosurgery is also known as bloodless surgery. An electrosurgery instrument includes a radiofrequency electrosurgical generator unit (ESU) and a hand piece with one or two electrodes (i.e. monopolar or bipolar instrument). Monopolar instruments comprise only one electrode that passes current from the active electrode to the biological tissue and from the tissue to the return pad (also known as inactive electrode) to complete the electric circuit. However, in bipolar electrosurgery, the current passes through the tissue between the two electrodes. Monopolar electrosurgery is very commonly used, as it is versatile and highly effective. Monopolar electrosurgery utilizes any of the two types of delivery systems: hand-controlled pencil and foot-controlled pencil. A monopolar circuit has four components viz. electrosurgical generator unit (ESU), active electrode, patient, and return pad.

Rising number of patients willing to perform medical and cosmetic surgeries, increase in technological advancements in electrosurgery devices, and increasing demand for minimally invasive surgeries are factors driving the global monopolar electrosurgery market. Electrosurgical accessories are classified into return electrodes, cords, foot switches, carts, cables, adapters, and tip cleaners. Based on application, the monopolar electrosurgery market can be segmented into general surgery, gynecological surgery, urological surgery, gastroenterological surgery, pneumological surgery, orthopedic surgery, cardiovascular surgery, cosmetic surgery, dermatological surgery, neurosurgery, and ophthalmic surgery. Cosmetic surgery and orthopedic surgery segments are expected to expand significantly during the forecast period.
