P21 Launches Learning Framework to Prepare Young Learners for Tomorrow's Challenges

Today, the Partnership for 21st Century Learning (P21), launched a new learning framework to provide practical guidance on integrating 21st century skills into learning programs and experiences for the youngest learners. The framework extends the organizations’ body of work, integrating early learning into the college and career readiness continuum.
Founded in 2002, P21 has worked with education, business, community, and government leaders on a comprehensive plan for giving school-age learners the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in a world where change is constant and learning never stops. The 21st Century Skills Early Learning Framework supports not only emerging skills in reading, math, science, and social studies, but also incorporates the critically important 21st century skills of critical thinking, collaboration, communication, creativity, technology literacy, and socio-emotional development for children under 5.

“There is increasing and much needed emphasis being placed on 21st century skill development in education today. But, if we go back to the beginning of life, in those critical years of brain development, we see opportunity to layer in 21st century learning in a natural and meaningful way,” says David Ross, CEO of P21. “The class of 2030 will be faced with a pace and complexity of information and work processes that we can’t even imagine today – and will require a skill set that we’re not teaching early enough en masse.”
P21 has developed the new framework alongside educators, education experts, and business leaders from early childhood development organizations such as Crayola, Fisher-Price, and The Goddard School to ensure these competencies can be applied in both formal and informal settings. Further, P21’s member organization will be supporting publication of the framework via their social channels.

To introduce the framework with context for users of what to expect and how to apply it, P21 has partnered with MakeMatic to create a videos that through animation show what providers and families can do to ensure young children acquire 21st century skills. The 21st Century Skills Early Learning Framework (P21 ELF) was developed to encourage educators, providers of services to young children, administrators, and policymakers to include early learning as they develop strategies for full integration of 21st century skills into their learning programs.
