Indian Surgeons Successfully Remove a Football Sized Tumor from a Russian Patient

Indian surgeons have time and again proved their expertise and surgical skills, be it life-saving procedures such as heart surgery or cancer treatment, or elective procedures such as cosmetic or bariatric surgery. A similar very difficult and arduous surgery was performed by a team of surgeons at a Delhi hospital on a 39-year-old Russian patient named Emil Abdullaev.

Emil was suffering from breathlessness and chest discomfort for about five years and had undergone series of investigations which revealed a mass or a tumour in his right lung. The tumour was rapidly growing in size and last weighed around 3.2 kgs, approximately the size of a football. This was exerting tremendous pressure on his right lung making it extremely difficult for him to breathe.

The patient had his surgery scheduled in Russia, but the doctors aborted the surgery midway fearing that the surgery may cost him his life. He was then advised to undergo chemotherapy which would make the tumour shrink in size. However, since such tumours do not respond to chemotherapy, it had no effect on the size of the tumour and the condition of the patient continued to deteriorate.

The team of onco-surgeons led by renowned Dr Sabyasachi Bal, at Fortis New Delhi, however, accepted the case.

“When the case was presented to us, we knew it was going to be a very challenging case. It was tough and strenuous because the tumour was touching the main vessels which supplied blood to the heart and other vital organs. Besides the area required to perform the surgery within the chest cavity was quite limited and we were not sure whether the lung would regain its functionality after the procedure” says Dr Bal.

However, Dr Bal and his team accepted the challenge and excised the giant tumour successfully which was occupying a significant portion of the right lung of the patient. Since the tumour was benign and not cancerous, it was very unlikely that it would grow back again.
