Girl Scout Troop 1236 at Completion of Money Matters Class

The cadets of Girl Scout troop 1236, located in Yorktown, Virginia, participated in a Money Matters class hosted by community activist, Hayley Foster. Local best selling author and salon owner, Erin Snyder Dixon, developed and facilitated the program. On Friday, February 6, 2009, the cadets joined together to examine the costs of ordinary items in day to day life; what drives each person's personal buying decisions; and what can be done when making financial decisions. After several group activities designed to increase personal awareness, the group set out to decorate ceramic piggy banks to store their future savings before making it to the bank. "In today's economic turmoil, it's important for teens to grasp control and gain knowledge involving financial matters," says Erin Snyder Dixon, who has owned a salon for more than 20 years. Erin points out that, "Teens have the power to shape their entire financial future, starting now. They need to be empowered to make great choices and comparisions when the shop." Each cadet was given a gift bag and certificate of completion at the end of the event. Gift bags included gift cards to local businesses, samples, and community coupon books. "The girls are already aware of things like brand names and participated in a spirited discussion about qulity and price. It was impressive to see such awareness and interest in young teens," reported Dixon. "It is amazing what scouting is giving these girls. At the beginning of class, I asked them to stand and tell the group their name and what scouting meant to them. Over and over the cadets cited helping others, learning new things, and meeting new people."

Hayley Foster, a community activist hosted the event. She routinely speaks on topics involving the family and community activism. Erin Snyder Dixon is the owner of Extremities Spa Salon, located in Newport News, Virginia. She is also the author /coauthor of four books and writes for NAILS magazine, a Bobit business Media publication. Girl Scout Troop 1236 is based in Yorktown, Virginia.
