China Introduces First Product Standard for Infant Woven Bedding
The standard covers bedding for infants aged 36 months or less, and includes a range of woven fabric products, including bed sheets, quilt covers, quilts, pillows, pillowcases, cushions, cushion covers, bumpers, mattress covers and wrappers.
The standard defines three quality levels: superior grade, first grade and qualified grade, allowing companies to choose the relevant quality level for their products. Product quality is defined by looking at the safety performance, physical and chemical properties, appearance quality and technical qualities of the merchandise.
The safety performance is defined by a number of criteria, including the products’ adherence to requirements relating to formaldehyde content, odor, sharp objects, burning behaviors, colorfastness, length and size of cords and drawstrings, and restrictions on phthalates, heavy metals, and banned azo colorants.
In addition, GB/T 33734-2017 also includes a number of provisions relating to the physical and chemical properties of the product. These include criteria relating to mass deviation of the filling materials, the oil content of filling materials, the breaking force, pilling property and dimensional stability in washing.

Stakeholders should be aware that silk quilts, down & feather quilts, down & feather mattresses, down & feather sleeping bags, down & feather pillows and cushions will need to comply with the requirements defined in their individual product standards.
