Global Avocado Market Outlook

Global avocado production amounted to 5,291 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +5.2% against the previous year level. Overall, the global avocado output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +4.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009, when the output figure increased by +15% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global avocado production attained its maximum volume of 5,291 thousand tonnes in 2012. From 2013 to 2015, the total avocado output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global avocado production was primarily driven by disposable income growth, popularity of healthy eating, and diversification of diet. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the avocado output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a robust expansion of the harvested area and a moderate improvement of the yield figures.

The country with the largest volume of the avocado output in absolute volumes was Mexico (1,639 thousand tonnes), accounting for 31% of global production. Moreover, avocado output in Mexico exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, the Dominican Republic (507 thousand tonnes), threefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Peru with a share of 7%. From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of Mexico's avocado producton stood at +4.6%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: the Dominican Republic (+13.5% per year) and Peru (+15.4% per year).

The world avocado harvested area amounted to 578 thousand ha in 2015, which was 5.5% more than the previous year figure. The harvested area indicated a noticeable increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +4.3% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, indicated some mild fluctuations over the recent years. Over the period under review, the total avocado harvested area peaked in 2015, and is likely to continue its expansion in the immediate term, following rising demand for avocado globally.

The global average avocado yield amounted to 92 thousand hg/ha in 2015, fluctuating near the previous year level. The yield figures recorded an upward trend over the period under review, with a compound annual growth rate standing at +0.6% from 2007 to 2015. These yield figures maintained, all in all, a stable trend pattern throughout the analyzed period. The highest avocado yields were recorded in 2014, when it peaked at 92 thousand hg/ha. Afterwards, it decreased slightly and then fluctuated around these levels throughout the analyzed period.
