BRITAIN’S WASTED WORKOUTS
OVERINDULGING BRITS SABOTAGE GYM GOALS WITH CALORIFIC TREATS• 65 per cent exercise on a weekly basis
• However 44 per cent admit to treating themselves to as many as three takeaways a week
• 58 per cent confess to consuming 1-3 chocolate bars a week
• Respondents have 2,971 excess calories leftover a week
The World Health Organization stress that having an active lifestyle is important for our health. However, research released today by health and wellbeing provider Benenden reveals that if we want to stay trim, then we must change our overindulging eating habits.
In a survey of 2000 UK respondents, Benenden has found that 65 per cent of Brits exercise on a weekly basis, with 54 per cent stating they work out 1-3 times a week. However, they are undoing their hard work with weekly cheat meals and high-calorie snacks.
Benenden’s research shows that respondents burn 1,334 calories a week exercising on average. However, they also consume 4,304 calories from treats, resulting in 2,971 excess calories.
This equates to an extra 3 and a half hours running a week to burn them off.
The shocking findings show that on average, 44 per cent of respondents admit to treating themselves with as many as three fast food takeaways a week. Furthermore, 58 per cent of respondents confess to eating up to three chocolate bars a week, sabotaging their weight loss efforts and counteracting the calories burned from exercise.
Geographically, when studying calories consumed vs calories burned, Coventry are the biggest cheaters. A staggering 3,895 excess calories were left over from cheat foods and drinks after their weekly exercise.
In contrast, respondents from Brighton and Hove have the smallest number of excess calories left over (1,502) and appear to eat less treats and exercise more. It turns out that the younger generations are more conscious about their health. The study reveals that’s 77 per cent of 18-24 year olds work out regularly, in contrast to just 54 per cent of 65+ year olds.
Further findings show that walking (79%) running (30%) and cycling (28%) are the preferred physical activities of all respondents and top the poll for types of exercise people undertake.
Jane Abbott, Clinical Director from Benenden said: “Although exercise is associated with many health benefits and not just weight loss, it is important to make further lifestyle changes if weight loss is your goal.
Combining both exercise and healthy eating together is a more effective way to lose weight and stay trim. It’s clear to see that we cannot out-exercise a bad diet and although treats should be incorporated into our diet, it is vital that consumption is monitored to ensure a steady weight loss and a healthy balance.”
