Pune: The 10th National Annual conference of technical communicators organized by India Chapter of Society for Technical Communication (STC) was inaugurated in Pune at the hands of Vice Admiral Suresh Bangara and Dr. D.N. Lele. Also present on the occasion were STC India President - Vasanth Viadyanathan, Prof Ujjwal K Chowdhury' Dean, Symbiosis International University Director, Symbiosis Institute of Media & Communication and Makarand Pandit, Program Manager STC Annual conference.
The STC India conference is the largest gathering of technical communicators in the country.At Le Meridien. This conference is India's largest event of its kind bringing together under one roof varied professionals from the field of technical communication.

Speaking at the occasion Vasanth Viadyanathan President STC said, " There is a shortage of technical communicators in India and to bridge the gap between demand and supply we have undertaken some key initiatives . We are talking to universities to add a special module on technical writing in their journalism or communication courses . The syllabus and the course material will be supplied by STC . We have already implemented a program at Christ University in Bangalore were a technical writing course was added to the Master's course .In addition Sikkim Manipal University is planning to launch a 1year PG course in technical writing as a distance learning program . Also formal academic program in technical writing is being launched at University of Mysore and has been launched at Dayanand Sagar Institutions “.

Prof Ujjwal Chowdhary said " In future small is big will apply in this field . Translators, assistant and consultant journalist will assume even bigger and important role with the help of technology. Also all communication strategies will begin with lateral thinking. People will increasingly use social networking to get trustworthy information.

About 325 technical writers attended this two-day conference.
During the two-day conference and the one-day preconference workshops, distinguished speakers from a cross-section of the high-technology industry's blue-chip companies addressed the audience on a variety of topics. Sessions at this year's conference ranged from effective documentation project management to an unconference-like, well, unconference! The topics discussed were Changing Face of Communication Today, FrameMaker & Darwin Information Typing Architecture, Championing Information Development: An Innovative Approach, Technical Writing in China, Editing in an Open and Dynamic World, Bringing Color to technical writing, Effort estimation for documentation projects, Wiki Documentation in an Agile Environment, Tagging Along with Metadata: A Primer on the Role of Metadata in Technical Documentation, "Lights.. Camera.. Action" Directing a Voiceover screencast and Tools for API Documentation. This year the publication of salary survey was also conducted by STC.

STC is a professional association that advances the arts and sciences of technical communication. Its members include technical writers, editors, graphic designers, multimedia artists, Web and intranet page information designers, translators and others whose work involves making technical information understandable and available to those who need it.
