Can Latency win again in Carlos Pellegrini?
Multiple Argentine champion Latency will try to secure a repeat victory in South America's most prestigious race as one of 20 contenders entered for the $380,701 Carlos Pelligrini (Arg-G1) on Saturday at San Isidro.
The seven-year-old Slew Gin Fizz horse enters Argentina’s signature event off a third-place finish in the Gran Premio Copa de Oro (Arg-G1) at San Isidro. Prior to the Copa de Oro, Latency won the Clasico Italia (Arg-G3) in his first start following a layoff of nearly six months after an unsuccessful trip to Dubai earlier in the year.
Latency, Argentina's reigning Horse of the Year, will bid to become the first horse to win back-to-back editions of the 2,400-meter (11.93-furlong) race since Storm Mayor in 2005-'06.
Latency's most formidable challenger may be Argentina's top-rated three-year-old grass colt, City Banker, who will return to his preferred surface after finishing second on dirt in the Gran Premio Nacional (Arg-G1) (Argentine Derby) on November 15.
The Lode colt was a six-length winner on the turf in the Gran Premio Jockey Club (Arg-G1), the second leg of Argentina's Triple Crown, and will benefit from a break in the weight scale. City Banker will carry 15 pounds less than Latency (134).
The last three-year-old colt to win the race was Storm Mayor in 2005.
Other contenders in the stellar field include three-time Group 1 winner Eyeofthetiger, winner of the Copa de Oro on November 16 and the 2007 Argentine Derby; dual Group 1 winner Body Soguero; Brazilian-bred Reraise, impressive winner of the Gran Premio Dardo Rocha (Arg-G1); Uruguayan-based Good Report, winner of the 2007 Gran Premio Jose Pedro Ramirez and South America’s Gran Premio Latinoamericano de Jockey Clubes (Arg-G1); and Mi Amiguito, winner of the Gran Premio Polla de Potrillos (Arg-G1) (Argentine Two Thousand Guineas), the first leg of the Argentine Triple Crown.
