04 December 2008, Reading, UK – Adax, an industry leader in high performance signaling infrastructure, and Kontron, a global provider of embedded and open modular solutions for the communications market, have announced a partnership to deliver high performance telecom signaling systems. This collaboration has begun with the benchmark testing of the Adax HDC3 signaling controller on the Kontron OM5080 MicroTCA system using the AM4010 Processor AMC. The results of this show that when tested against two typical rack mount servers this AMC platform offers comparable performance levels whilst providing a reliable solution with greater flexibility and scalability.

The combined solution is ideal for telecom equipment manufacturers (TEMs) for edge and access applications, radio network controllers (RNCs) and mobile switching centers (MSCs) who need to design redundant systems without any single point of failure.

The tests were designed to determine how much CPU resource is required to maintain the signaling links at full Erlang and to demonstrate that there is still enough processor power in reserve to run an application. As an example: with the system running close to theoretical throughput with a 124 link configuration and MSU size of 32 Bytes, the CPU usage of the AMC system was 11%, and with a message size of 128 Bytes the CPU usage was 6%.

The results showed that the Adax/Kontron solution performs with ease and that the CPU utilization on the lower spec AMC system was comparable with the larger rack mounted servers, demonstrating how well the small form factor is adapted to high performance in compact carrier-grade systems. Commenting on the partnership, Irene Hahner, at Kontron: “In today’s ever-changing business environment, Kontron must be able to offer our customers what they need, when they need it. As the only vendor who can support a single software driver and a common API we believe our partnership with Adax provides our customers with the advantage they crave in a crowded market.”

“Meeting the demands for faster time-to-market and leading-edge technology has become a necessity and as a result we are delighted to partner with Kontron,” explains Robin Kent, director of operations at Adax Europe. “Its MicroTCA platform is well suited for applications with high demands on traffic and throughput and our boards are able to perform many thousands of transactions per second, maximising performance and ensuring no degradation of service for the customer. When combined, the end-user can take advantage of a solution which offers both high performance and cost-saving benefits.”
