India Nuclear Power Sector Investment Opportunity Outlook 2032

India started its journey in nuclear programme shortly after getting independence by setting up Atomic Energy Commission in August 1948 to look after atomic energy activities in the country. In order to consolidate all the research and development activity for nuclear reactors and technology under the Atomic Energy Commission, The Government of India created the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay (AEET) on 3 January 1954 as the premier research institution for nuclear research and that marked the beginning of nuclear era of India. Despite the growth in the research on nuclear reactors, the country got its first guidebook how to use nuclear energy for civil purpose through the Atomic Energy Act, 1962.

Nuclear power sector in India has already travelled quite a long way to reach the present stage with 6780 MW installed capacity and 22 reactors from starting with two boiling water reactors worth 320 MW in 1969. Today, nuclear power provides nearly 3% of total electricity in India and this percentage will go up soon due to massive capacity addition in the coming years. Though India’s nuclear power sector is 100% controlled by the central government in operation and maintenance, the expansion of nuclear power sector is equally attractive to numerous private enterprises across the world, obviously including India. It is therefore imperative to know the prospective and driving factors of Indian nuclear power sector for industries, nuclear energy experts, policymakers across the world.

India ranks among the world's most advanced emerging economies and the growth of the country is directly linked to the supply of power. There has been a quantum increase in the installed power production capacity in India since independence from both non-renewable and renewable sources. In spite of these additions, more than 400 million Indians do not have access to electricity. This fact sums up the current power scenario of the country. Electricity shortages during the months of summer have become routine in almost all the states in India. Power cuts in northern, eastern as well as some western and southern states have become social menace, with ensuing public outcry. For the central and state governments, the only way to deal with this issue is to have a clear long-term vision for power generation in the country.
