About DiabetesIndia

“Diabetes India”, originally named as “The Indian Task Force on Diabetes Care in India”, was initially formed by a group of around 400 practicing diabetologists and has now opened doors to other medical specialists, family physicians, people with diabetes and all others interested in the cause of diabetes. The concept of diabetes care which is “available, accessible and affordable” to all people with diabetes, is the main aim and objective of “Diabetes India”. The association is also involved in philanthropic activities like free insulin supplies for the economically deprived, prevention initiatives especially amongst school children.

About Diabetes

Diabetes is considered to be mother of all diseases. Diabetes Mellitus ( meaning sweet urine) is a chronic condition caused by a lack of the hormone insulin – either an absolute lack wherein the body does not produce any insulin or a relative lack wherein the body makes insulin but insufficient to cause the effect of lowering blood glucose. There are two types of diabetes one which usually appears in children and adolescents. This generally occurs due to increasing obesity and sedentary behaviour in children. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body becomes resistant to the effects of insulin and then cannot make enough. This results in an increase in blood sugar level. As of now prevention for type 1 diabetes is still under discussion however type 2 diabetes may be prevented by means of healthy diet, exercise and weight loss to achieve and maintain healthy body weight.
