Is the self-regulation of engineering in Canada doomed?

Toronto, November 22, 2008 - The Council for Access to the Profession of Engineering will hold its Second Annual Engineering Knowledge Conference and Annual General Meeting titled "Can self-regulation of the engineering profession in Canada survive the 21st century?" tomorrow at 9:00 am at Metro Hall, 55 John Street, Toronto. This potentially provocative conference will focus the attention of academics, policy makers, regulators and engineers on the evolution of regulation in engineering over this century.

Gurmeet Bambrah PhD, CAPE Coordinator says "By instituting the Fair Access to Regulated Professions Act (2006), Ontario has been taking the lead on addressing the need for a fair, objective, non-discriminatory and no more than burdensome licensing process for engineering services. This is a key requirement under the General Agreement on Trades and Services (GATS) as well as the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). What does this mean for leading edge migrant engineers who bring knowledge from other parts of the world?"

The conference will also feature presentations from key academics and policy makers including, Dr Glen Roberts of the Conference Board of Canada; David Adams , President , Professional Engineers Ontario; Professor Monica Boyd, University of Toronto and Duncan C. Boswell, Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP.
