Copernicus Masters 2017: T-Systems Open Telekom Cloud

The Copernicus Masters T-Systems Open Telekom Cloud Challenge welcomes innovators to develop Earth observation (EO) applications or service ideas during a four-week sandbox exercise on the public Open Telekom Cloud service.

Copernicus applications providing benefits for European citizens and industry is what T-Systems is looking for. More specifically, applications addressing challenges caused by increased demand for mobility, urban logistics and tourism are of high interest and can be submitted until 30 June 2017.

Gilching, 22 June 2017 – Huge amounts of big data from space are constantly available around the globe. This big data contains several petabytes of valuable information that can also be processed for non-space applications. Through spaceborne data, added-value is generated which helps engineering development or business decisions.

Cloud computing provides systematic evaluation of big data, understanding the collected information, how it relates to each other and the near real-time analysis of the collected data. Crucial questions are how to bring all the data together, store them and make use of this gigantic amount of data. T-Systems wants to find answers to these types of questions with its Copernicus Masters Challenge. Countless applications on Earth tackle challenges related to these questions with cloud-based services relying on space-borne data for commercial and societal purposes. With smart services and smart products based on big data and cloud technology, entrepreneurs can revolutionise various industries with novel business ideas. These kind of business ideas are exactly what the Copernicus Masters T-Systems Challenge is looking for.

Open Telekom Cloud Platform Supporting EO Applications
The Open Telekom Cloud combines the benefits of a public cloud with the security of a private cloud: It provides satellite data, analytics tools, standard interfaces, and workflow management. T-Systems is looking for solutions that offer benefits to European citizens and their public administrations, which face challenges in meeting increased demand for mobility, urban logistics, tourism, and more while simultaneously reducing negative environmental impacts. Submissions using Sentinel Satellite data in combination with other data sources on the public cloud platform are welcome until 30 June 2017 at copernicus-masters.com.

Copernicus Masters participants benefit from outstanding prizes for their business ideas based on EO. The winner will be granted access to the Copernicus Accelerator programme, if eligible. This European Commission (EC) initiative provides a tailored business coaching scheme to entrepreneurs delivered by mentors with valuable expertise. Moreover, the winner has the chance to receive a ticket to the next satellite launch in Kourou. In addition, cash prizes and substantial satellite data quota are awarded.

Lucrative Sentinel Data Boosting Business
Big data and cloud services have changed workflows and professional environments of the industry. This development displays a major benefit for startups, since the technologies capable of handling huge amounts of Sentinel data are available and affordable. The EO data serves as a goldmine for founders and innovators who make use of its intelligence, building on big data and cloud computing technologies to create commercially attractive and sustainable services.
