TRAVERSE CITY, MI – November 14, 2008 – Managed services provider Appia Communications today announced a telepresence video communication solution that offers significant cost savings for companies and organizations.

Video communication enables real-time collaboration without the costs, inefficiencies, and carbon emissions of travel. Until now, these benefits have been outweighed by high costs, which typically run from $10,000 to over $200,000 per conference room.

According to Appia President Victor von Schlegell, Appia’s solution, called Appia Video Communicator (AVC), can be implemented for less than $6,500 per conference room — a price that includes the software, server, speakerphone, camera, and display.

But AVC isn’t limited to conference rooms. It can also be used by remote users via a centralized video bridge, which Appia operates and which is priced much lower than ISDN and other video transport services.

"Most other solutions require a multipoint conferencing unit (MCU), which adds to both the initial cost and monthly bandwidth cost," von Schlegell said. “Our hosted video bridge service cuts these costs and enables users to join video sessions from anywhere. We felt it was important to support those who can't be present in a physical conference room."

AVC can be used for video broadcasts as well as video conferences, and broadcast participants can attend at no cost. "We offer a free decoder that runs on almost any PC,” von Schlegell said, opening up tremendous low-cost possibilities for off-site training, distance learning, presentations, and other one-to-many applications.
