Robotics is the branch of technology that deals with designing, construction, operation, and application of robots. The field of research dedicated to extending rehabilitation through the deployment of robotic devices is called rehabilitation robotics. The purpose of rehabilitation is to repair some or all of the patient's physical, sensory, and mental abilities lost due to injury, illness, or disease. Rehabilitation includes supporting the patient to reimburse for deficits that cannot be reversed medically. It is prescribed after many types of injury, illness, or disease, including cancer, amputations, arthritis, cardiac disease, orthopedic injuries, neurological problems, stroke, spinal cord injuries, and traumatic brain injuries. Patients with severe paresis, robots provide the passive movement of the upper limb. Passive actions activate cerebral areas involved in active movements. For the patients with some movement capacity, robots can support the weight of the limb in contrast to gravity or owing to the physical interaction between the robot and the subject. A robot and a patient can interchange forces or share position based on the type of control system.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2016, around 200,000 people suffered from spinal cord injury in the U.S. and the annual incidence rate is estimated at 15-40 new cases per million populations, nearly 12,000 to 20,000 new cases in a year. All over the world increasing elderly population along with growing prevalence of conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, spinal cord injury, dementia, cerebral palsy, and other age related disabilities are playing a major key role in driving the global market for robotic rehabilitation.  The geriatric population is highly susceptible to falls and injury and thus, need constant assistance, in turn fueling growth of the rehabilitation robots market.
