Intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring (IONM) is a monitoring technique which refers to a group of procedures used during surgery to monitor neural pathways during high-risk neurosurgical, orthopedic, peripheral nerve, and vascular surgeries. These procedures helps surgeons in avoiding damage and preserving functionality of the nervous system. IONM is used in most of the surgeries. It is directly proposed at reducing the risk of neurological deficits after operations that involve the nervous system. IONM has evolved during the last two decades. Introduction of IONM has reduced the risk of weakening deficits such as muscle weakness, paralysis, hearing loss, and other loss of normal body functions. IONM is generally performed by technicians supervised by a physiologist, or a neurologist. It is necessary to have certification to do IONM. Similar techniques as used in IONM are now used in a few kinds of operations for guiding the surgeon in an operation to help obtain the best results.

The IONM market by method is segmented into three methods those are minimally invasive, non-invasive and invasive. Non-Invasive method is the method which do not requires puncturing of the skin. The diagnosis is done with the help of body surface sensors. In invasive method which requires the procedures cutting/puncturing of the skin or inserting instruments into the body. The minimally invasions involves in the procedures that limit the size of incisions required.
