World Food Day: the Challenges of Climate Change and Bioenergy

10-16-2008 08:31 PM CET | Energy & Environment

Press release from: Article 13

923 million people in the world are undernourished

The majority of undernourished people live in rural areas where their main source of income is from the agricultural sector. The sector is becoming increasingly unstable due to factors like climate change, income disparity, and potentially the biofuel boom which threaten to increase the number of hungry even higher in the decades to come.

Article 13 supports World Food Day on the 16th October and intends to raise awareness of both sides of the debate to its team, network and website viewers. We have therefore posted a brief outline of the factors, the main arguments, and the FAO’s link for further information.

Why all the fuss?
In the quest for agricultural certainty, energy security and greener energies, biofuel has been a hot topic in the energy agenda of recent years. According to those who advocate biofuel, biofuels address simultaneously the challenges of energy security and climate change. However, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations argue strongly that conventional first generation biofuels threaten food security by fuelling food scarcity and pushing up food prices. They argue that land which was once being used to grow food is now being used for producing energy.

Current Rising food costs
What does it all mean for producers, consumers, rich and poor?
Food, agricultural markets and the highly debated issues surrounding biofuels affect all individuals, organisations and countries. It is a topic that one cannot ignore nor evade, and therefore Article 13 advocate that people become better informed on all sides of the debate, more aware of the current happenings, and make a conscious effort to contribute to discussion that should, essentially be global.
