New Government Guidelines Allow Au Pairs To Return To The US For An Additional Year

American parents now have even more choice when it comes to live-in child care. The U.S. State Department has recently changed the rules governing au pairs, making it easier for experienced au pairs to return to the U.S.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- The U.S State Department recently changed the guidelines that affect young child care providers who come to America to work as au pairs.

According to the new guidelines, those who have successfully completed the au pair cultural exchange childcare program can now return to the US for an additional year to serve as an au pair.

Before the June 27th change, au pairs could not return to the states, as an au pair, after completion of the initial au pair program. The new amendment to law 22 CFR Part 62 allows childcare providers to return to the US on a J=visa if certain conditions are met:

1. The returning au pair must have successfully completed a qualifying cultural exchange child care program in the US
2. Must have resided outside of the US for two years after completing the initial program
3. Be between the ages of 18 and 26

The same program standards apply to returning au pairs. The au pair must attend qualifying classes at a local community college or university and attend monthly meetings as part of their program requirements.

"It's not all work and no fun for those in the au pair program. The program standards strictly state that they work no more than 45 hours a week and must have one and a half consecutive days off a week, one of which must be a weekend day. In addition, they also receive one full weekend off each month and two weeks paid vacation sometime during their year. Our au pairs are also paid a weekly stipend.
