European Conference “Financing Transport and Infrastructure Projects” 27th and 28th October 2008, in Berlin, Germany

How to finance cost intensive infrastructure and transport projects, will be explained and discussed by European experts at the European Conference on Financing EU Transport and Infrastructure Projects, held by the European Academy for Taxes, Economics and Law, October 27th and 28th, 2008 in Berlin, Germany.

To foster competitiveness and innovation, transport and infrastructure provisions need to be made and constantly improved. As much as this is an essential task, it equally is one of the biggest and most expensive challenges for the Community. Neither Member States alone nor community funds are sufficient to achieve the required goals. The European Commission channels the available funds in a system of priority projects supporting in research and construction through TEN-T. Funding and planning on the EU level is divided into annual and multiannual programmes leaving room for negotiations with national governments on applications to a TEN-T call. Regions are heavily affected by the outcome but are not officially mandated. Further objections lie in the nature of long term transport and infrastructure projects and the structure and regulations of other available grants in addition to the different organisations providing financing.

The European conference focuses on the particular challenges of different ways of financing transport and infrastructure. Due to the nature of such projects in time and extend as well as conflicting priorities between Member States and the Commission, national and regional governments may exchange experiences and receive advice on how to develop the best transport and infrastructure for a region.
The conference will cover aspects from European and national to regional level. International experts demonstrate a wide range of solutions for national and regional authorities in debate provoking presentations covering major aspects of transport and infrastructure financing options.#
