Bile acids are steroid acids which are mainly found in the bile of mammals. Cholic acid or 3α, 7α, 12α-trihydroxy-5β-cholan-24-oic acid is a major primary bile acid that is secreted by liver as Chenodeoxycholic acid. It is usually conjugated with glycine and taurine. Difference between different bile acids is presence or absence of hydroxyl groups in positions 3, 7 and 12.
It helps in absorption of fat, sterols in liver and intestine, and excretion of cholesterol. Chenodeoxycholic acid is used for treatment of gall stones. Salts of cholic acid are called cholates. Bile acids recirculate through an enterohepatic circuit which includes the bile ducts, liver, small intestine and portal vein. The bile acids occur as negatively charged ions (anions) at physiological pH and later require a carrier to transport it through enterohepatic tissue membranes. Bile acids can become toxic when accumulated in large amount which may cause membrane disruption and there are many ways or mechanisms by which it is possible limiting their accumulation in body tissues and blood.

Physical properties- cholic acid is a crystalline white solid that is insoluble in water, benzene and soluble in acetic acid, alcohol, chloroform, ethyl ether. The unique detergent like properties of the bile acids aids in digestion and absorption of hydrophobic nutrients. It is bitter in taste with sweetish aftertaste. Cholic acid is manufactured as Cholbam capsules in the United States and is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of patients who are suffering from peroxisomal disorders like Zellweger syndrome, steatorrhoea, and bile acid synthesis disorders caused by single enzyme defects. It is manufactured by extraction of alkaline bile from cows, neutralizing it with acids, form magnesium salts, filtration, and separation of deoxycholic acid and subsequent acidification of filtrate.
