Press release from: SGS

The American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA), has released the eighteenth edition of its Restricted Substances List (RSL). The list covers twelve categories and more than 250 chemicals.

The AAFA is a national trade association representing the textiles, apparel and footwear industries, as they compete in the global market. The RSL covers chemicals and other substances whose presence in a product is restricted through a government regulation or law. The list identifies the most restrictive iteration of that regulation worldwide, helping AAFA members create a safer and more sustainable supply chain. Since regulations are changing all the time, the RSL is reviewed every six months.

The eighteenth edition of the AAFA RSL contains a number of amendments to the seventeenth edition, including:

• A temporary regulation pertaining to arylamines removed from the comments
• Test method KS K 0736:2014 concerning disperse dyes is added
• Restriction on cadmium for textiles in Washington State added to comments
• Test method DIN 54233-4 for lead release removed for European Union
• Turkey added as a country that regulates Triphenyltin (TPhT)
• Washington State’s restrictions on six phthalates added to comments
• Appendix 1 – Reporting updated

Working with a global supply chain can be difficult. Stakeholders need to be sure their products comply with international, industrial and regulatory standards around the world.
