Banking assets on CEE15 markets to exceed EUR 1000 billion in 2009

Central and Eastern European banking markets (CEE15*) maintained very strong performance in 2007. The combined value of banking assets of CEE15 markets increased in 2007 by nearly 25% to 810 billion EUR. Poland remained the major market in the region with assets exceeding 221 billion EUR, corresponding to ~27% regional share, followed by Czech Republic (140 bn EUR) and Hungary (95 bn EUR). The highest assets value growth has been recorded on smaller markets including: Bulgaria, Romania, Latvia and Lithuania were banking assets jumped by nearly ~40% yoy.

Also within the group of major 200 CEE banks, that are controlling ~91% assets on CEE 15 markets, a very strong performance could be observed. The non-weighted average return on assets in the group amounted to 1.48% while average return on equity exceeded 15.6%.

Assuming that the growth of “New Europe” markets will remain strong in the mid-term perspective, it is likely that the combined value of CEE15 assets will exceed 1000 billion EUR already during 2009.

*CEE15 include: Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovak Republic, Romania, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia i Herzegovina, Albania and Macedonia.
