China Revises its National Standard for Down and Feather

China has revised its national standard for down and feather to harmonize it will international requirements. The current national standard, GB/T 17685-2003 – Down and Feather will be replaced with GB/T 17685-2016 – Down and Feather. The updated standard will become effective on July 1, 2017.

With global and domestic consumer interest in product health and safety on the rise, the older version of the standard was no-longer applicable to practical production demands and market requirements. Since its drafting in 2003, there have been significant advances in international detection technology and methods, aligned to stricter international regulations for products containing down and feather as a raw material. The opportune revision of national standard GB/T 17685, will allow harmonization with these stricter international and domestic requirements.

The majority of the revisions to the national standard relate to down and feather penetration, dust problems and odor. The update also includes some changes to the technical requirements relating to the testing methods of down and feather.

In addition to bringing the national standard into line with international requirements, the new standard will also help to improve the overall quality of down and feather products. The new standard will also help to protect the rights of online consumers, the interests of manufacturing companies, maintain fair market competition, and provide a solid foundation for management, production and trading of feather and down products.

The new revised standard will come into effect on July 1, 2017, and stakeholders are now advised to check their compliance with the updated standard’s requirements.
