Affordable Marketing During a Recession
CHARLESTON, SC — June 16, 2008 — Recession: the top of the news, the front page of the paper, and the talk around the water cooler. The “R” word tends to scare people and often they freeze up and stop spending any extra money–and this usually means marketing for their businesses.What many businesses don’t realize is that a recession or economic slowdown is the most important time to market their company. The mistake is ceasing marketing efforts to try to save money. While marketing budgets should be carefully monitored, they should not be cut. Business owners need to look at what marketing strategies work and which tactics are affordable.
Affordable marketing during a recession requires business owners to use marketing strategies that they can track for effectiveness and those that have high return on investments. Businesses must look at the most affordable type of marketing in order to weather a recession.
The answer for most companies is having a strong online presence. According to researching firm Parks Associates, only 18% of US households do not have internet, and out of that 18%, 7% said they plan to get internet within the next 12 months.
As the internet market continues to grow, the need for a strong website also increases. What many businesses don’t realize is that having a high-quality website can be less inexpensive and the most effective form of advertising / marketing. Internet marketing cuts expenses of printing brochures and flyers, sending out direct mail pieces or sales letters, and the postage costs that incur.
What scares business owners is that they often do not know the first thing about internet marketing and what a strong website even means. Instead of not taking action, hiring a web copywriter is what many businesses need to do to stand out. Marketing through a website is different and often company owners and managers don’t understand what makes a good website. The site should speak for itself. Hiring a professional copywriter—someone who understands the ways of the web, understands how to write for a web audience, and isn’t emotionally involved with the company—will pay off in the end.
Many companies think they are saving on costs when they write their own copy. Usually, they’re not. Also, a professional copywriter understands the intricacies of Search Engine Optimization and organic copy. Having a website without these components is ineffective.
With the increase in gas prices (not to mention other rising costs), many consumers are staying home to shop and research companies. They are looking for the best deals to save them time and money. Companies that have a strong website are finding an increase in business.
Now is not the time to stop marketing. Companies should be on the lookout for high-quality copywriters who know the internet and the differences of marketing to an internet audience. The internet might just prove to be the effective, affordable solution you need during the hard economic times.
