Greenhouse Horticulture Market to Reach USD 72.14 Billion by 2035 as Food Security Concerns and Water Scarcity Accelerate Controlled-Environment Growth | SNS Insider
Growers Are Moving Under Cover as Weather and Water Get Harder to PredictAccording to a recent report by SNS Insider, the Greenhouse Horticulture Market is growing as droughts, floods, and unseasonable temperature swings make open-field yields less dependable. Retailers want year-round supply of fresh produce, cities are running short of farmland, and a greenhouse can deliver far more output per acre than an open field while using a fraction of the water.

The global Greenhouse Horticulture Market size was valued at USD 35.0 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 72.14 billion by 2035, growing at a CAGR of 7.5% from 2026 to 2035. Newer facilities look quite different from older single-layer structures, with on-site renewable energy, AI-guided fertigation, and high-efficacy LED lighting working together to trim operating costs and carbon output.
Financing models are changing as well. Greenhouse-as-a-service contracts turn a large construction bill into predictable ongoing fees, which gives mid-sized farmers who lack the collateral for a big loan a way in. Demand from cannabis cultivation and pharmaceutical crop production in several jurisdictions adds another layer of investment in climate-controlled growing space.
Why Does Plastic Still Lead While Glass Gains Ground?
Plastic accounted for about 57% of the market in 2025. Polyethylene and PVC coverings and frames cost less, adapt to a wide range of climates and structure sizes, and perform well in dry and semi-arid regions where UV-stabilized film holds heat and humidity. Glass is expected to grow fastest, because growers of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, strawberries, and ornamentals who sell into premium retail and export channels value its tighter control over light, temperature, and humidity.

By component, Hardware held about 60% of 2025 revenue, as structures, frames, glazing, and climate-control equipment make up the core capital outlay of any greenhouse. Services is the fastest-growing component, helped by greenhouse-as-a-service contracts and rising demand for installation, maintenance, agronomic consulting, and remote monitoring from growers who prefer to buy technical expertise rather than build it in-house.
Traditional Houses Dominate the Installed Base, Smart Systems Grow Quicker
Traditional Greenhouses represented roughly 62% of the market in 2025, reflecting the large number of basic and mid-tier structures on smaller commercial farms and family-run horticultural businesses. They remain the most affordable way into protected cultivation. Smart/Automated Greenhouses are growing faster, as sensor networks, AI-guided fertigation, and remote climate control cut manual labor, and as falling hardware costs bring automation within reach of high-value specialty and export-oriented growers.
Gutter-Connected/Multi-span structures led by structure type with about 54% of revenue, because linking bays under a shared roofline lowers construction and heating costs per square foot for large vegetable and floriculture operators. Freestanding/Hoop Houses are the fastest-growing structure, appealing to smaller farms, urban growers, and producers in emerging markets that need faster, cheaper builds.
Fruits, Vegetables & Herbs was the largest crop category in 2025, backed by retailer demand for consistent, pesticide-free supply every week of the year. Flowers & Ornamentals is the fastest-growing crop group, as floriculture capacity expands and consumers spend more on ornamental plants. Commercial Cultivation accounted for about 72% of application revenue, while Research & Academic is growing fastest from a small base, supported by university and government investment in controlled-environment agriculture.
Europe Holds the Lead While Asia Pacific Sets the Pace
In 2025, Europe remained the leading regional market, accounting for more than 40% of the total revenue globally. This is due to the region's well-established horticulture, presence of a strong concentration of suppliers of technology used in the growth process, high demand for locally grown products, and supportive policies promoting water-efficient procedures. The Netherlands accounted for 26.0% of the total revenue earned in Europe, supported by its expertise in greenhouses technology and climate control systems.
The Asia Pacific region is the fastest growing, thanks to factors such as urbanization, less arable land per capita, and government funded smart farming systems in countries like China, Japan, and South Korea. China leads the market in terms of regional revenue at about 36.0%.
The North American market still has a lot of potential. The U.S. Greenhouse Horticulture Market was valued at USD 8.93 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 18.93 billion in 2035 at a CAGR of 7.8%, contributing roughly 85.0% of the total revenue in the region. In North America, the demand is driven by greater food safety awareness, large commercial greenhouse operations and the cultivation of cannabis and pharmaceutical crops.
Middle East & Africa is expanding on water scarcity concerns and food security programs, with the UAE contributing about 27.0% of regional revenue as it works to cut its dependence on food imports. In Latin America, Mexico accounts for about 38.0% of regional revenue, supported by greenhouse vegetable exports to North America, while Brazil and Colombia benefit from growing floriculture and vegetable export industries.
What Could Hold Back Adoption?
Cost is the main obstacle. Building an advanced, climate-controlled facility takes serious capital, which keeps smaller farmers and growers in emerging regions out of the market and concentrates investment among well-funded commercial operators. Service-based and shared-infrastructure models are starting to chip away at that barrier.
Energy bills are the second concern. Climate control, lighting, and automation use a lot of power, and in regions with high energy prices those running costs can erode the economics against conventional open-field farming.
Recent Developments and Competitive Landscape
Costa Farms, Kubo, Netafim, Certhon, Dalsem, Priva, and Hoogendoorn Growth Management are among the companies active in the market. In January 2024, Costa Farms acquired Battlefield Farms of Rapidan, Virginia, adding 45 acres of greenhouse production and more than 700 varieties of annuals and perennials. Kubo introduced what it describes as the world's first CO2-negative greenhouse at GreenTech Amsterdam in June 2024, a design that draws carbon dioxide from outside air instead of buying it in. In September 2024, Netafim announced GrowSphere, an operating system that automates irrigation and fertigation, and in August 2026 it added GrowSphere FLEX, a smaller controller aimed at smallholders and mid-sized farmers.
Across the industry, suppliers are concentrating on lower-carbon greenhouse designs, automated climate and irrigation control, and service-based offerings that widen access for growers with limited capital.
