Las Vegas Photographer Shares Five Lessons From 20 Years of Landscape Photography in LightRocket Article
"The Velvet Abyss": the Milky Way over Antelope Canyon, Arizona. Photograph by Alexander Vershinin.
The article begins with Vershinin's first camera, a Soviet FED he picked up at about the age of twelve. It had no autofocus and no automatic exposure, and every frame cost real money for film. According to Vershinin, that taught him the habit that still defines his work: decide before you press the shutter.
From there the article sets out five lessons from more than two decades of landscape photography. Fewer frames make better photographs. A wide panoramic frame asks more of the photographer than a standard one. The light decides the picture. Equipment matters less than the decision behind it. And every photograph should be made with the final print in mind.
The main image of the article is "The Velvet Abyss", Vershinin's photograph of the Milky Way over Antelope Canyon in Arizona. It is available as a signed, limited edition print.
Vershinin has photographed professionally since 2006, first with a Linhof Technorama 617S panoramic film camera and now with a Phase One IQ180. His work has received more than 140 awards at The Epson International Pano Awards between 2013 and 2022, including Gold in 2016 and 2018. His prints are made to order in Las Vegas in sizes up to 36 x 108 inches, on Fujiflex paper or as Lumachrome TruLife acrylic face-mounts, and start at $900.
The LightRocket article follows features on Luminous Landscape and The Phoblographer earlier this month.
