Press release from: Mode INC

Companies across four countries can now monetise de-identified versions of their internal data via partnerships.

Companies across four countries can now monetise de-identified versions of their internal data via partnerships.

Businesses and nonprofits that have created lots of internal data from emails, documents, tickets, and invoicing can now sell a de-identified version of their data to be used in AI research and training. This is available to businesses in the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia that have minimum company size and history criteria.

Mode explains this as a company data partnership. You agree with Mode exactly what will be shared; Mode will export and de-identify the agreed data, and you are paid according to the agreed terms. Your original data will not be affected.

The approximate value of a company's data can be worth up to $100,000 and $5 million depending on the size of the company, industry, and number of years of data. These are all indicative, as the company will conduct a full audit of your internal tools and volume of data.

Why has a company's operational history become valuable?

AI developers have created large language models and other systems using a lot of information from public web content. However, many of the internal processes within businesses do not appear publicly. Requests from customers, decisions made, negotiations, and handovers all happen in private systems. This can show you how the business actually works and can be difficult to find out from marketing websites and articles.

AI tools have been developed to help with business processes, and developers have been interested in this data. A ticket will show you more about the actual processes that happen within a business compared to a help center article. Sales threads will show you the context of your sales process that you could never get from a textbook.

Most companies haven't had a realistic way to provide this data to AI developers. There is a huge amount of data stored across many internal tools; it contains personal and sensitive information, and few organizations will have the legal and technical staff to prepare it. Mode has designed this process to make it easy.

What data will be used?

Mode categorizes the data they purchase into six categories:

Emails and Calendars - Communication and coordination within the business.

Documents and Files - Working documents and company knowledge.

Chat and Collaboration - Problem solving within teams.

Calls and Transcripts - Conversations and decisions.

CRM and Sales - Customer journey and sales context.

Invoicing and Operations - Invoices, Payments and systems used.

Mode will purchase data from various tools, including Microsoft products, Gmail, Outlook, Google Drive, Slack, Jira, Confluence, Salesforce, HubSpot, Zendesk, Notion, Monday.com, Dropbox, Zoom, AutoCAD, Figma, NetSuite, Paychex, and ServiceTitan. They also work with over a thousand other tools. Before any data is exported, you will agree what systems and dates will be used.

How is the data de-identified?

One of the most common questions asked will be how the sensitive data is handled. Mode state that they remove sensitive data and replace personal identifiers in the agreed data. Personal and company names will be replaced with generic names. If there was a customer record with a specific customer name and contact name, this will be replaced with 'Company 01' and 'Person 01'. The content of the request and decision will remain the same.

For example, if the CRM originally contained 'Customer', 'Contact', 'Can we speed this up?' and 'Approved rush fulfilment', after filtering this will be changed to generic names. The request and decision will remain clear to understand. Mode state that the original data will not be affected as they will work with a copy.

Mode also state that unfiltered data will not be provided to AI developers. They will also not publish your data. If you are interested in this partnership, it is always worth asking for the specifics of how this is achieved. This includes how the de-identification is verified and what responsibilities are passed on.

Who can participate?

To participate you will need to be based in the UK, Canada, Australia or US. You will also need to have several years of operation history. The minimum number of staff depends on your industry:

Legal - Minimum 10 staff members.

Accounting, Finance and Medical - Minimum 15 staff members.

All other businesses and Nonprofits - Minimum 50 staff members.

You can use Mode's online calculator to find out your payout. You will need to enter your industry, how many full time desk based staff you have, how many non-desk based staff you have, how many years of operational data you have and where your team is based. This will tell you the range of payout you will receive. It will also tell you how much a potential data refresh could be in the next 24 months. For example, if you have 50 desk based staff, 15 non-desk based staff and 8 years of data, you will receive approximately $210,000 to $830,000. You may also receive an extra $170,000 to $660,000 from a data refresh. The larger your profile, the more you will receive. If you have 5,000 desk based staff and 10 years of data, you will receive an estimate in the millions. Mode will also add that this is not an offer.

How does it work?

There are three steps to this process. Firstly, you will provide Mode with basic information about your company size, operation history and systems. Secondly, you will review the offer. Once you have approved what will be used, you will agree what value you will receive, the terms, systems and dates. Finally, your team will log in to the approved systems. Mode will export and de-identify the agreed data and you will be paid.

This will only take a couple of hours of your staff's time. Mode will not require you to use any new software.

About Mode

Mode's previous products have helped facilitate over $1 billion in earnings and savings for users. It reports having raised $120 million of capital. Deloitte ranked Mode Mobile number one in their 2023 Technology Fast 500 list for North America. This was due to their 32,481% growth in revenue over 3 years. Mode's founder and CEO Dan Novaes has been featured in publications including The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, CNBC, Inc, Yahoo Finance, Benzinga and Business Insider. The latter featured him in an article titled 'This startup wants to pay for your email and photos to train AI'.

Considerations

As this involves selling a copy of your internal data, there are a few considerations to make.

Ownership - You can only sell what you own. If there is client, vendor or confidential data within the records, there may be restrictions. If you are in a legal, medical, accounting or financial industry, there will be additional responsibilities. You will likely want your counsel to look into whether they can share even de-identified data.

Privacy Law - There are various regulations across the four countries. If there are customers or patients within the data, they may have rights. You should ask Mode how their methods fit with your regulations and who is responsible if an identifier is missed.

Limitations - Once the filtered data has been provided to an AI developer, you cannot get it back. You should ask what limitations there are to what the buyer can do with the data. Can you sell it multiple times? What does the agreement say about refreshing the data?

Offer - As the payout is dependent on an internal audit, it may not match the online estimate. You should ask what the payment terms are, when you will be paid and what the terms are around the offer changing.

What does this mean for the market?

This shows a general shift in how organisations think about their data. Previously data was seen as a by-product. Now companies are looking to price the data they have held for years (invoices, tickets and threads). This can be used as raw data for other companies to build software.

Whether this market will grow will depend on how much value AI developers place on private data from businesses, how regulators view de-identified business data and how comfortable companies are with the trade-off. For Nonprofits and small firms with a long operation history, this provides a potential new income stream. However, there may be questions from customers and staff about how their information is being used.
