The Loyalty Myth: Dee Agarwal on What Actually Keeps Customers

• Dee Agarwal challenges conventional customer loyalty strategies, arguing that quality, convenience and fair pricing are what truly keep customers coming back.

ATLANTA, GA, Oct 27th, 2026, ZEX PR WIRE - Customer loyalty has become an increasingly elaborate concept. Businesses are encouraged to create personalized experiences, develop loyalty programs, surprise customers with unexpected perks and find new ways to turn ordinary transactions into memorable moments.

There is value in creating a thoughtful customer experience. But according to Dee Agarwal, businesses can sometimes overcomplicate what actually makes people come back.

"The foundation of loyalty is remarkably simple," Dee Agarwal says. "Give people something they genuinely value, make it easy to get, and give them a reason to feel good about what they paid for it."

That may sound less exciting than the latest customer retention strategy, but simplicity can be precisely what makes it effective. Customers have limited time, attention and money. When a product consistently delivers on what it promises, the experience is straightforward and the price feels reasonable, there may be very little reason to look elsewhere.

Customer experience has become a major focus for businesses, but no amount of clever engagement can permanently make up for an offering that does not deliver.

A strong product or service gives customers the most fundamental reason to return. It solves a problem, fulfills a need or provides an experience they value. Everything built around it is ultimately supporting that core proposition.

"Businesses can spend a lot of time thinking about how to make an experience memorable," Dee Agarwal says. "But if the underlying product is not delivering, the extras are unlikely to create lasting loyalty."

That does not mean customer experience is unimportant. It means the experience begins with what customers are actually buying. A company can have excellent communications and an impressive loyalty program, but customers still have to believe that the underlying offering is worth returning to.

The same principle applies to convenience. Customers may appreciate thoughtful details, but they also notice when completing a basic interaction requires unnecessary effort.

A difficult checkout process, confusing communication or an unnecessarily complicated return can introduce friction into an otherwise positive relationship. The more effort customers have to expend, the more opportunities they have to reconsider whether the experience is worth it.

For Dee Agarwal, reducing that friction can be one of the simplest ways to strengthen the customer relationship.

"People notice when a company respects their time," he says. "Making the experience easy is one of the clearest ways to show that you understand what customers actually need." Convenience does not have to mean removing every human element or reducing an experience to a series of automated steps. It can simply mean making the path from interest to purchase to continued use feel intuitive.

There is also a practical component to loyalty that can get lost in conversations about emotional connection: cost.

Customers may enjoy interacting with a brand and appreciate its personality, but the value still has to make sense. When a product consistently feels worth what someone is paying, returning becomes easier to justify.

That does not necessarily mean being the cheapest option. Value can come from quality, durability, convenience or the overall experience. What matters is the relationship between what customers receive and what they give in return.

"Customers are always making some version of a value calculation," Dee Agarwal says. "If the experience consistently feels worthwhile, there is less incentive to start looking for an alternative."

That calculation can happen almost unconsciously. When a familiar product works well, is easy to purchase and feels fairly priced, switching can seem unnecessary.

This is where Dee Agarwal sees an opportunity for businesses to rethink how they approach retention. Instead of asking what new tactic will convince customers to return, companies can ask a more basic set of questions.

Is the product good? Is the experience easy? Does the price feel justified? Are customers getting what they expected?

If the answers are consistently yes, businesses may already have many of the ingredients that encourage repeat behavior.

"Loyalty is often treated like something companies have to manufacture," Dee Agarwal says. "Sometimes the better approach is to build something people simply want to come back to."

There is still a place for personalization, rewards and memorable experiences. But those elements work best when they reinforce an already valuable customer relationship. They should enhance the reason someone returns, rather than become the reason the company hopes someone will overlook its shortcomings.

In a marketplace full of increasingly sophisticated retention strategies, that may be the simplest lesson of all. Customers do not necessarily need to be dazzled every time they interact with a company. They need to know that what they are getting is good, that getting it is easy and that the exchange feels worthwhile.

Get those fundamentals right, and returning can become less about loyalty in the traditional sense and more about making the obvious choice again.
