Micro Nuclear Reactors Market: U.S. Army's Janus Program Sets a Five-Site, 20-Plus-Reactor Pathway
The U.S. Army has selected five companies to advance microreactors for military installations through its Janus program, with agreements worth up to $2.2 billion combined. The projects cover sites at Fort Bragg, Fort Campbell, Fort Hood, Fort Benning and Fort Drum. The Army expects the program, together with private-sector investment, to support more than 20 reactors across Department of War installations. The awards fund development and deployment milestones; the reactors are not yet operating. The Army's target for the first reactor to operate on an installation is September 2028, making Janus a significant test of whether microreactors can progress from design and demonstration toward deployment.According to DataM Intelligence, the micro nuclear reactors market was valued at USD 1.39 billion in 2025 and is estimated at USD 1.58 billion in 2026. The market is forecast to reach USD 5.05 billion by 2035, at a 13.80% CAGR from 2026 to 2035. North America is the largest regional market, while Asia Pacific is projected to grow fastest. The report segments the market by reactor type, application and region.

Janus gives developers a pathway to advance their designs through site planning, testing and other technical milestones. Its commercial significance will depend on how these steps translate into operating projects, repeat orders and financing beyond initial government-backed demonstrations.
Competition is taking shape around reactor designs and their supporting systems: fuel, manufacturing, transport, site integration and operations. Vendors must show that their designs can meet customer needs while progressing through safety reviews, authorization and licensing requirements.
North America's leading market position aligns with the concentration of U.S. development programs and federal testing infrastructure. Asia Pacific's projected growth points to an opportunity for suppliers and developers as regional energy-security needs and demand for reliable low-carbon power evolve.
Military installations provide an early use case for independent power, while industrial sites, mining operations and remote communities may value continuous electricity and reduced fuel logistics. Broader adoption will depend on demonstrating deployment economics, regulatory readiness and reliable supply chains.

Company Profiles
Antares Nuclear develops factory-produced microreactors for defense and other strategic applications. The company was selected for a Janus agreement at Fort Bragg and reported achieving criticality with its Mark-0 reactor in June 2026.
BWX Technologies (BWXT) is advancing its BANR high-temperature gas-cooled reactor for Janus at Fort Campbell. The company says the design uses TRISO fuel and is intended to provide electricity and process heat; its stated schedule places operations in the early 2030s.
General Atomics is advancing its Tactical Energy System for Janus at Fort Hood. The company describes GA-TES as a liquid-metal-cooled microreactor with a baseline net output of about 5 MWe, scalable to about 20 MWe.
Westinghouse Electric Company is developing the eVinci microreactor and reported a zero-power, high-temperature criticality test milestone in September 2026. The company says the test results will support design validation and development of a prototype.
Market Analysis
Janus and federal test programs are creating pathways for technical validation, but award announcements and criticality milestones do not by themselves establish commercial deployment. Developers will need to advance through safety and licensing processes, demonstrate dependable operation and build the manufacturing and fuel capacity required for repeat projects.
North America currently leads the market, while the report identifies Asia Pacific as the fastest-growing region. Across both, the competitive position of suppliers will depend on their ability to match reactor designs to customer requirements and move projects from testing into authorized operation.
