Drone and Rope Access Crews Clean Wynwood Apartment Building in Two Days With Every Shop Open

Miami, Florida. Vista Drone Cleaning, a South Florida exterior cleaning company, has cleaned the facade and every exterior window of Sentral Wynwood, a mixed-use apartment building at 51 NW 26th Street in Miami's Wynwood district. The work took two days, with a tethered cleaning drone and a rope access crew working at the same time, and every shop and the restaurant at street level stayed open throughout.

Mold, mildew and mineral streaks had built up on the building's glass and window frames, and many of its windows sit behind horizontal railings and metal fins or in tight inside corners. Building management wanted the work finished by a Monday deadline.

The street side needed the most preparation. The drone works above the sidewalk and the travel lane, and FAA rules for commercial drones restrict flight over people and moving vehicles. The wash rig and hose also had to sit in the street. The job therefore ran under a maintenance of traffic (MOT) plan, with cones, tape and a spotter keeping the area under the drone clear, along with City permits for work in the public right-of-way and metered parking spaces rented from the Miami Parking Authority to stage the rig at the curb.

The drone, flown by FAA Part 107 certified pilots, washed the open glass from the top of the building down, supplied with water through its tether from the rig in the rented spaces. Rope access technicians took the windows behind the railings and fins and the inside corners, and worked the mineral streaks by hand where a low-pressure soft wash alone could not finish them. The glass was finished with deionized water so it dries without spotting.

Both crews finished on Sunday, a day ahead of the deadline. Building management called it "the best, fastest window cleaning" and said they would refer the company to other buildings.

"A drone covers the open glass on a building like this quickly, but not every window can be reached from the air," said Eliot De Paz, owner of Vista Drone Cleaning. "Glass behind railings and fins still needs a technician on a rope. Running both crews at once, with the street plan in place before the first flight, is what finished the job in two days with every shop open."

Vista prices commercial facade and window cleaning at $0.12 to $0.25 per square foot, with a fixed price set after a free site survey, and larger buildings receive lower rates. Each drone staging position reaches up to 200 feet, about 18 stories.
