Virginia Beach Charter Boat Mega Bite Gets Teak Restoration

Mega Bite Charters LLC spent two months of the off season renovating their 1986 47 foot Buddy Davis. The owner decided to keep the classic look and keep all the varnished wood on the boat. Captain Keith explained the decision, saying "while many boat owners are are painting their varnish to keep maintenance to a minimum, we decided to keep the classic look. All the wood now has 9 coats of spar varnish. We also repainted the bridge and cockpit areas."
The teak cover boards were sanded down and coated with a high tech coating. The decks have been belt sanded back to a new layer of good teak. The owners even painted the engine room. Also refinished during the renovation were the fighting chair, helm pod and helm chair.
Captain Keith summarized the project, commenting that "Mega Bite looks as good as she did in 1986 and is ready to fish for the 2008 season."
Captain Keith fishes the Mega Bite out of Virginia Beach. He has fished local waters from the Eastern Shore, Chesapeake Bay, and Virginia Beach to Cape Hatteras for over 30 years. Captain Keith's vast fishing experience also includes the waters of Barbados, Turks and Caicos, Bahamas, Bermuda, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and Key West.
Inshore fishing on his boat Mega Bite includes trips for striped bass, sea bass, and both red and black drum while offshore fishing charters target tuna, sharks, dolphin, billfish and other species. The area is world famous for its saltwater fishing.
A stellar attraction of Virginia beach inshore fishing is undoubtedly the excellent striped bass fishing. Known locally as rockfish, these delicious fish migrate down the East Coast and congregate in the lower Chesapeake Bay and coastal waters from November thru March. Anglers sometimes catch monster rockfish, exceeding 50 lbs. The Virginia state record rockfish has been broken many times recently, with some of the biggest fish being caught out of Virginia Beach.
In the summer months, offshore fishing from Virginia Beach is excellent. Captain Keith described Virginia offshore fishing saying, "Nothing is etched in stone with fishing around here. We would mostly be chasing yellowfin tuna thru much of the summer. These tuna like deeper water for the most part, often being caught in water from 30 to 100 fathoms. We watch the satellite shots to get a general idea of how far north or south they might be. Fishing spots include the Norfolk Canyon, Cigar, Weather Buoy or Wayne's World. These hotspots range up to 75 miles out of Rudee Inlet. In addition to yellowfin tuna, anglers catch bluefin, bigeye and longfin albacore tuna, dolphin fish, wahoo, billfish and sharks.
