PFAS Water Treatment Market Forecast to Reach US$16.2 Billion by 2035 as Buyers Prioritize Waste Reduction and Treatment Performance
DataM Intelligence estimates the global PFAS water treatment market at US$3.4 billion in 2025 and forecasts it will reach US$16.2 billion by 2035, a CAGR of 16.9% from 2026 to 2035. The purchasing decision is changing: utilities and industrial operators are weighing not only how much PFAS a system removes, but also what happens to spent carbon, resin and concentrated waste afterward. Regeneration, destruction and lower-waste treatment models are becoming part of the commercial conversation. The United States and Japan illustrate different near-term market pressures. In the U.S., federal outreach and grant funding are helping water systems plan projects while treatment rules remain under review. In Japan, a binding PFOS and PFOA drinking-water standard took effect in April 2026, and government-backed demonstrations are testing treatment options under domestic conditions.

Recent Developments
1. EPA launched PFAS OUT in April. The initiative offers affected water systems location-specific resources, funding guidance and technical assistance, with EPA aiming to contact about 3,000 systems facing PFOA or PFOS challenges. That puts practical project support alongside longer-term compliance planning.
2. California received US$77.257 million for PFAS and emerging-contaminant work. Announced in May, the federal grant allocation can support testing, planning and infrastructure projects for communities, drinking-water systems and private well owners.
3. Japan selected six PFAS treatment technologies for demonstration. The Ministry of the Environment reported that 25 proposals were submitted. Selected projects include Kurita's activated-carbon treatment system and a Sumitomo-led project using porous carbon derived from rice husks, giving local buyers evidence to assess technologies beyond vendor claims.
4. Takenaka launched an end-to-end PFAS remediation service. The Japanese contractor's PFASsure offering covers site investigation, planning, remediation work and monitoring. Its model responds to a practical buyer issue: contaminated soil and groundwater may require coordinated site work as well as water treatment.
5. Hitachi High-Tech and FUST Lab reported a PFAS decomposition demonstration. In lab-scale tests using contaminated water, the partners said total PFOS and PFOA concentrations fell to 50 ng/L or less; they reported reductions of up to 99.98% under the test conditions. The results are a demonstration, not a commercial-scale performance guarantee.
6. Furukawa Electric and Ryuki Engineering developed a laser-based decomposition approach. Their October announcement described applying a high-power fiber laser to PFAS-loaded activated carbon, reporting degradation efficiency above 99.999% in evaluation tests. The companies said further work is needed toward practical deployment.
7. Onterris highlighted regenerable ion exchange and a service-based sales model. Its SORBIX RePURE process captures and concentrates PFAS, then regenerates resin for reuse. The company is advancing "Regeneration as a Service," which could let utilities access regenerable media without building and operating their own regeneration facilities.
Market Segmentation
The PFAS water treatment market is segmented by technology, PFAS type treated, end user and region. Technologies include granular activated carbon (GAC), ion exchange resins, reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, advanced oxidation, electrochemical oxidation, plasma-based destruction, foam fractionation and other emerging methods. Treated PFAS types include long-chain compounds, short-chain compounds and mixtures. End users include municipal utilities, industrial facilities, remediation contractors, military and defense facilities, airports, commercial and institutional sites, groundwater and wastewater treatment operators, and landfill leachate facilities.
Long-chain PFAS accounted for an estimated 60% of the market in 2025, according to DataM Intelligence. For buyers, however, short-chain PFAS and mixed contamination remain important treatment challenges. Procurement teams are comparing removal performance with lifecycle costs, media replacement, concentrate handling and the availability of a credible disposal or destruction route.
