Savory Snacks Market: USD 147.96 Billion Growth Puts Meal Occasions in Focus | Report by DataM Intelligence
HYDERABAD, India - October 16, 2026 - Savory snack brands are testing how far their products can travel beyond the retail bag. PepsiCo's Lay's restaurant concepts in Madrid and Shanghai, alongside Doritos' chef-led "Loaded" dishes, show how established snack brands are being adapted for restaurant, delivery and at-home meal occasions. These moves point to a commercial opportunity for manufacturers: use familiar flavors and formats to build new foodservice occasions, then determine which concepts can generate repeat demand.DataM Intelligence values the global savory snacks market at USD 213.01 billion in 2025 and forecasts USD 360.97 billion by 2035, a 5.4% CAGR. That is an increase of USD 147.96 billion in annual market revenue across the forecast period. Potato chips and crisps hold the largest product share at 32.8%, while the United States accounts for 28.4% of the market.

Extruded snacks account for 21.4% (US$45.58 billion), while nuts and seeds represent 16.9% (US$36.00 billion). Potato chips retain broad price and flavor appeal; nuts and meat snacks benefit from protein positioning.
By processing, fried snacks hold an estimated 71.5% share (US$152.30 billion), while baked, air-popped and reduced-fat products make up 28.5% (US$60.71 billion). By channel, supermarkets and hypermarkets lead at 52.6% (US$112.04 billion), with convenience stores contributing 23.8% (US$50.70 billion). Single-serve packs support impulse sales, while online channels favor multipacks and specialty products.
## Regional Focus: United States and Japan
United States:
The market is estimated at 28.4% of global sales, or US$60.50 billion in 2025. Recent launches target protein, gluten-free diets, alternative oils and natural colors. The challenge is converting initial interest into repeat purchases and maintaining enough weekly sales to keep shelf space.
Japan:
The market is estimated at 4.5%, or US$9.59 billion in 2025. Calbee competes through products including Potato Chips, Jagarico, Jagabee and Kappa Ebisen. Japan's frequent flavor rotations and convenience-store distribution favor localized seasoning and smaller packs, while rapid launches increase production and packaging complexity.
## Company Profiles
- PepsiCo: Generated nearly US$94 billion in 2025 net revenue and sells Lay's, Doritos, Cheetos, Tostitos and Ruffles. Its recent activity extends brand use into protein snacks, restaurant-style meals and in-person experiences.
- The Campbell's Company: Reported US$9.7 billion in fiscal 2026 sales. Goldfish, Kettle Brand, Cape Cod, Late July, Snyder's of Hanover and Snack Factory give it reach across crackers, chips and pretzels.
- Calbee: A Japan-based snack producer with brands including Jagarico, Jagabee and Kappa Ebisen. Its international portfolio includes potato chips and snack products across overseas markets.
- Mondelēz International: Reported US$38.5 billion in 2025 net revenue and sells in more than 150 countries. Its savory-snack presence includes Ritz and other biscuit and cracker brands.

## From snack brand to meal platform
In March 2026, PepsiCo opened Pilla Tortilla in Madrid, a restaurant concept built around Spanish tortillas made with Lay's. The following month, it opened a limited-time Lay's Potato Restaurant in Shanghai, with potato-based dishes and collaborations intended to create experiences beyond traditional snacking. PepsiCo described the Shanghai activation as a test-and-learn model for future brand experiences and away-from-home occasions.
Doritos is extending the same logic through prepared food. In June, the brand named chef Gordon Ramsay as global partner for Doritos Loaded, a meal concept built around flavored tortilla chips and toppings. PepsiCo said the partnership would include eight recipes for restaurant and hospitality operators in key markets, as well as food-truck activations at Formula 1 events.
These initiatives are more than limited-edition flavor launches. They test whether a packaged snack can serve as an ingredient, base or menu feature-and whether brand recognition can encourage consumers to try it in a different setting. For manufacturers, the potential upside is access to meal occasions and foodservice channels without abandoning the taste equity of established products.
## The test is repeatable demand
A restaurant activation can generate attention and trial, but its commercial value depends on what happens afterward. Foodservice versions need to work in real kitchens, withstand preparation and delivery, and offer operators a clear reason to include them on a menu. Packaged products may also need to support the concept with suitable portion sizes, toppings, sauces or multipack formats.
That creates operational questions for product teams. A chip designed for direct consumption may soften under toppings or heat; a seasoning that performs in a bag may need adjustment in a prepared dish. Brands and restaurant partners can use limited-time menus to test flavor combinations, serving formats and price points before committing to broader distribution. Repeat orders and customer feedback can then help separate a durable menu opportunity from a short-lived promotion.
The approach also offers a way to localize established brands. PepsiCo's Shanghai concept drew on local and international culinary references, while Doritos Loaded recipes are intended for global restaurant and hospitality operators. Regional adaptation can keep a recognizable product at the center while allowing menus to reflect local tastes.
## Core category economics still matter
Foodservice expansion does not remove the pressures facing the packaged-snack business. Potato, corn, edible-oil, nut and packaging costs can affect margins, while retailers continue to expect promotional support and dependable shelf velocity. Manufacturers also need to manage the complexity of short-run flavors, changing formats and special packaging.
The market report identifies supermarkets and hypermarkets as the leading distribution channel, with convenience stores important for single-serve purchases and e-commerce supporting discovery and multipack buying. Foodservice concepts add another route to consumers, but they need an operating model that can scale: reliable supply, consistent product performance, and a clear link between the activation and ongoing sales.
Innovation within the retail aisle remains relevant. Potato chips and crisps form the largest product group, while nuts, seeds and meat snacks contribute protein-oriented options. Baked, air-popped and alternative-oil formats are also expanding the range of product attributes manufacturers can test. The strategic opportunity is to connect these product choices to specific occasions instead of relying on a new flavor alone.
North America is the largest regional market, while Asia-Pacific is the fastest-expanding region, according to the report. PepsiCo's Madrid and Shanghai concepts illustrate how foodservice experiments can be tailored to different markets, but each still needs local execution and evidence of repeat demand.
