For merchants, the first priority is to remain calm and handle the situation clearly. Make a note of the error message displayed and the time. Then wait about 30 to 60 seconds and try the payment again. If the transaction is canceled again with code 91, do not send multiple requests in quick succession. Instead, offer an alternative payment method.
The cause could lie with various parties: for example, the network operator or the card-issuing bank's system. If other cards work at the same terminal, it's possible that only a specific card issuer is affected. If transactions are being canceled with different cards, there may be a disruption in the payment network.
Before calling support, merchants should first be patient and wait to see if the issue resolves itself. If the problem persists, it's advisable to have the terminal ID ready for the call. This allows the issue to be narrowed down more precisely.
Proper training of staff can also help them handle disruptions confidently. Regular functional tests and a brief training session for employees provide peace of mind.
