150,000+ Tonnes of New Annual Recycling Capacity Planned as Aluminium Scrap Supply Chains Shift Toward Low-Carbon Manufacturing
Aluminium recycling is moving beyond waste recovery toward a strategic raw-material sourcing model as manufacturers seek reliable supplies of secondary metal for automotive, construction, packaging and industrial applications. New investments in sorting, melting and casting are strengthening the link between scrap collection and high-quality recycled aluminium production. In December 2025, EGA Leichtmetall announced a €145 million investment in a German facility expected to add 110,000 tonnes of annual scrap-sorting capacity and 153,000 tonnes of melting and casting capacity. The project illustrates how recyclers are investing in processing infrastructure to secure feedstock and supply industrial customers with recycled metal.According to DataM Intelligence, the global aluminium scrap market was valued at US$39.13 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach US$69.09 billion by 2033, at a 7.22% CAGR from 2026 to 2033. Asia-Pacific accounted for 61.21% of market revenue in 2025, while North America is identified as the fastest-growing region. Automotive was the leading end-user segment, with a 40.36% share. Together, those figures point to a market where regional scale, automotive demand and access to usable scrap shape commercial positioning.

The opportunity is moving upstream into collection networks and material processing. Post-consumer scrap can contain mixed alloys, coatings and contaminants that make it harder to turn into high-specification products. Investment in sorting and separation can help recyclers recover more valuable grades, while direct take-back agreements give manufacturers better visibility into material quality and availability. Aluminium scrap also offers a potential hedge against primary-metal input costs and supply interruptions, although the benefit depends on scrap grade, processing economics and local availability.
The competitive change is visible in the scale and design of new projects. In the United States, Novelis has begun producing its first coil on the cold mill at its Bay Minette recycling and rolling plant, a US$5 billion project moving toward planned commercial shipments in 2027. In Europe, Hydro is adding capacity that can process post-consumer scrap into specialised extrusion alloys. These investments link scrap recovery more closely with downstream production, helping producers control feedstock quality and match recycled material to customer specifications.
Regional competition will depend on both scrap availability and the ability to process it for end markets. Asia-Pacific leads the DataM market analysis, supported by large manufacturing and aluminium-processing bases. North America's faster growth is reinforced by new recycling and rolling capacity, including the Bay Minette project. Europe is expanding its recycling footprint as companies seek to keep more post-consumer material in regional production loops. The resulting investment does not remove feedstock constraints: scrap collectors and processors still need to balance export prices, local demand and the cost of upgrading lower-quality material.
Automotive accounts for 40.36% of end-user demand
Automotive is the market's largest end-user segment in DataM Intelligence's analysis. The material's strength-to-weight properties support vehicle lightweighting, while closed-loop arrangements can return production offcuts to the supplier for remelting. The next challenge is end-of-life vehicle scrap, which may be mixed across alloy grades and require more sophisticated sorting to serve high-performance applications. Packaging, construction, aerospace and electrical and electronics also create distinct requirements for scrap purity, alloy composition and traceability. Pure aluminium, mixed aluminium, extrusion and casting scrap therefore have different value depending on the product and process they can support.
Recent Developments
- October 2026: Novelis produced the first coil on the cold mill at Bay Minette, a milestone toward commissioning the US$5 billion recycling and rolling facility and planned 2027 commercial shipments.
- 2026: Alcoa announced a US$65 million investment at its Mosjøen site in Norway. The project is intended to add capacity and incorporate post-consumer recycled aluminium into products at the facility for the first time.
- 2025: Hydro began construction of its Torija, Spain, recycling plant. The project is designed for 120,000 tonnes of annual extrusion-ingot production and up to 70,000 tonnes of post-consumer scrap processing.
- 2025: Novelis announced an aluminium coil made entirely from recycled end-of-life automotive scrap, demonstrating a route for vehicle scrap to return to automotive sheet applications.

Company Profiles
Novelis Inc.:
Novelis combines aluminium rolling with recycling, including closed-loop arrangements that return customer manufacturing scrap to production. Its Bay Minette project is a major expansion of integrated US rolling and recycling capacity. In 2025, the company also reported production of a coil made entirely from end-of-life automotive scrap, highlighting its push to use recovered material in higher-value applications.
Hydro Aluminium:
Hydro operates recycling facilities across Europe and the Americas and reported reaching about 850,000 tonnes of annual post-consumer scrap recycling capacity by the end of 2025. Its Torija project adds capacity for specialised extrusion ingots and up to 70,000 tonnes of post-consumer scrap processing, with advanced sorting intended to support higher recycled content.
Constellium SE:
Constellium supplies aluminium products to automotive, packaging and aerospace customers and is developing recycling processes to return scrap to demanding applications. In its 2025 sustainability reporting, scrap represented 47% of total metal input, up 13% from 2024, with the increase attributed primarily to the ramp-up of a new recycling center.
Alcoa Corporation:
Alcoa's low-carbon product portfolio includes EcoDura, which contains at least 50% recycled content. In 2026, the company announced a US$65 million investment at Mosjøen, Norway, combining increased capacity with plans to incorporate post-consumer recycled aluminium into products at the site. The project extends Alcoa's recycled-content offering in the European market.
Other notable market participants include UACJ Corporation, Gränges AB, Kaiser Aluminum, AMAG Austria Metall AG, Zhongwang Group and China Hongqiao Group.

The sector's next phase will reward companies that can secure scrap and reliably convert it into the right alloy and product form. Investment in collection, sorting and remelting can improve access to feedstock, but capacity plans must be matched with customer qualification, local scrap flows and the economics of processing. Companies that build those links across the value chain will be better placed to compete for automotive, packaging, construction and other applications.
Asia-Pacific's leading position and North America's faster projected growth create different routes to expansion: scale and industrial demand in Asia-Pacific, and new capacity and integrated production in North America. Across regions, the strategic question is whether recyclers and manufacturers can establish dependable access to high-quality material as more end-of-life products enter the scrap stream.
