Borealis announced an investment of more than €100 million to expand polymer compounding at its Schwechat, Austria, site. The project includes a new polypropylene compounding line expected to begin operating in the second half of 2026. It will add capacity for specialty compounds used in applications requiring tailored material performance, strengthening supply for European customers as manufacturers seek higher-value plastics and more recycled content.

The investment creates opportunities for compounders, additive suppliers, equipment providers and customers in automotive, packaging and industrial markets. Companies such as Borealis, LyondellBasell, Covestro, BASF and Westlake are positioning portfolios around customized compounds and regional supply. Westlake's recent acquisition of ACI's compounding businesses also expands its footprint across Portugal, Romania and Tunisia. Together, these moves raise competitive pressure to scale specialized formulations, localize supply and meet customer requirements for cost, quality and sustainability.

According to DataM Intelligence, the global Plastic Compounding Market was valued at US$75.48 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach US$125.87 billion by 2033, growing at a 6.6% CAGR over the forecast period.

Asia-Pacific is identified as the largest and fastest-growing region, supported by manufacturing, automotive and packaging demand. Automotive is the leading end-use segment, where lightweighting and electric-vehicle components require compounds with specific strength, heat resistance and durability. Recycled-content formulations are also gaining traction as manufacturers look to meet circularity goals while preserving material performance.

Demand is supported by the rising use of semiconductors in consumer electronics, automotive systems, telecommunications and data-intensive computing.

Semiconductor packaging connects a chip to other components and circuit boards while protecting the die and helping manage electrical and thermal requirements. As chip designs become more complex, packaging choices can affect performance, power consumption, reliability, size and manufacturing cost. Advanced approaches-including 2.5D and 3D integration, fan-out wafer-level packaging and system-in-package designs-are attracting attention for applications that require denser connections among processors, memory and other components.

Artificial intelligence and high-performance computing are strengthening the role of advanced packaging in system design. Integrating multiple dies or memory components in one package can help address bandwidth, latency and power requirements. At the same time, established packaging formats remain important across a wide range of devices. The market therefore spans both traditional package technologies and newer architectures being developed for demanding computing and connectivity workloads.

Market scope spans technologies, materials and end users
DataM Intelligence segments the semiconductor packaging market by technology, including grid-array, small-outline, flat no-leads and dual in-line packaging; by material, including plastic, ceramic and metals; and by end user, including consumer electronics, automotive, healthcare, IT and telecommunications, and aerospace and defense. These segments serve different requirements for cost, thermal performance, reliability, footprint and production volume.

Consumer electronics demand supports high-volume packaging across devices such as smartphones, computers and wearables. Automotive applications place greater emphasis on long-term reliability and operating conditions, while data-center and AI workloads are increasing interest in packages that support high-speed connections and tighter integration. For semiconductor manufacturers and outsourced semiconductor assembly and test providers, choosing a package involves balancing design requirements with materials availability, manufacturing yield, qualification time and total cost.

The report identifies Asia-Pacific as a major center of the packaging ecosystem, estimating that the region accounted for around 58% of market share in 2025. Its concentration of foundries and outsourced assembly and test capacity supports its position across established and advanced packaging. North America and Europe also represent significant markets, with investment priorities shaped by supply-chain resilience, automotive electronics and efforts to expand local manufacturing capabilities.

Recent agreements and investments target capacity and collaboration
Recent announcements show how companies are responding to packaging demand through capacity expansion and ecosystem partnerships. In September 2026, Amkor Technology announced a second phase for its Arizona advanced packaging and test campus. The company said the expansion is expected to add 60,000 square meters of cleanroom space and bring its planned total investment in the campus to US$12 billion. Construction of the second phase is anticipated to begin in late 2027, with completion expected by the end of 2029.

The timeline and capacity remain subject to project execution.

In September, Tata Electronics and Dutch equipment supplier Besi signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen advanced packaging capabilities in India. The collaboration is intended to support technology readiness, equipment capabilities, engineering development and training at Tata Electronics' planned semiconductor packaging facility in Jagiroad, Assam. The agreement illustrates how equipment access and technical expertise are part of building packaging operations, alongside investment in production facilities.

In July 2026, Samsung Electronics and Broadcom announced an expanded collaboration spanning memory, foundry and advanced packaging for AI infrastructure. The companies said their work would include advanced packaging based on Samsung's 2-nanometer process, including 2.3D and 2.5D integration. The companies described the broader collaboration as an expected opportunity of more than US$200 billion across memory and foundry through 2030; that figure refers to the collaboration across those areas, not to semiconductor packaging alone.

Together, the announcements point to different routes for developing the sector: adding manufacturing space, building local technical capabilities and coordinating packaging with memory and foundry roadmaps. Announced investments and agreements are not the same as available production capacity. For buyers, deployment will depend on construction and qualification schedules, customer commitments, process yields and the ability to deliver consistent package performance at scale.

Qualification, capacity and cost will shape adoption

Companies evaluating packaging suppliers need to consider the full production pathway: package design, materials, assembly equipment, thermal and electrical performance, testing, manufacturing yield and capacity access. A technically suitable package may still face delays if it is difficult to qualify, relies on constrained materials or cannot be produced at the required volume. High capital requirements and specialized expertise also influence how quickly new facilities and processes can reach commercial production.

DataM Intelligence's report provides market sizing and forecasts through 2033, alongside analysis by technology, material, end user and region. It is designed to support semiconductor manufacturers, foundries, outsourced assembly and test providers, equipment and materials suppliers, electronics companies, investors and procurement teams assessing packaging strategies, capacity plans and market opportunities.
