Your Next Customer May Reject Your Brand Without Ever Visiting Your Website
As ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI assistants increasingly influence product discovery, brands are facing a new problem: being recommended once does not mean they will be recommended the next time.Consumers are increasingly turning to AI assistants to decide what to buy, which software to use, and which brands to consider.
But unlike a Google search ranking, an AI recommendation may not remain the same.
A September 2026 academic audit of AI-generated product recommendations found that products suggested by AI assistants could change across repeated requests-even when the question remained the same. The researchers curated 2,528 real commercial-advice queries and evaluated 1,536 responses across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews.
The rise of AI-assisted discovery has now trained the spotlight on a new problem for marketers.
A business may check ChatGPT once, see its brand in the answer, and assume it is visible. But another customer asking the same question may receive a different set of recommendations.
Worksbuddy's Ranko aims to address this by helping businesses monitor how consistently their brands appear across AI-generated answers rather than relying on one-off checks.
Worksbuddy was started in 2025 by Rampawan Kumar, after he saw businesses struggling with fragmented software and disconnected workflows. The company today positions itself as a unified business platform built around specialised AI agents, with Ranko focused specifically on AI search visibility.
Ranko is built around a simple idea: an AI answer should not be treated like a fixed Google ranking. Brands need to know how often they appear, where they disappear, which competitors replace them, and what sources are influencing those answers.
"Checking ChatGPT once and finding your brand gives you a screenshot, not a measurement," Kumar says in a proposed statement for the story. "The real question is whether the brand keeps appearing when different customers ask different versions of the same buying question."
Ranko currently tracks brand visibility across AI assistants including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and Perplexity, while also comparing competitors, prompts and the sources being cited in those answers. Worksbuddy says the product can monitor buyer questions on a recurring basis rather than treating one response as representative.
Getting started
In 2025, as businesses rushed to add AI tools to existing technology stacks, Kumar saw a different problem emerging.
Companies were adding more software, but their work was not necessarily becoming simpler.
CRM, marketing, projects, invoicing, contracts and automation were often spread across separate systems, leaving employees to move information between tools manually.
This led to Worksbuddy's broader thesis: instead of adding another dashboard, businesses needed software that could understand what was happening and help act on it.
The company built a collection of AI agents around different business functions, including lead management, outreach, project management, billing, contracts, voice calling, automation and AI visibility. Its website currently describes Worksbuddy as a platform connecting seven AI agents and more than 24 integrations.
Ranko grew out of the visibility side of that problem.
As buyers started asking AI assistants questions such as "What is the best CRM for a small sales team?" or "Which project management tool should an agency use?", marketers had little visibility into what happened inside those conversations.
Traditional SEO tools could tell a company where it ranked on Google.
Analytics could show which visitors arrived on its website.
But neither necessarily showed whether an AI assistant had recommended three competitors before the buyer ever reached a search engine or company website.
The issue becomes harder because AI answers are not fixed.
The September academic audit found that ChatGPT and Gemini shared only 5.4% of displayed source domains on average for the same query. In 76.7% of comparisons, they displayed no source domain in common at all.
This initial problem led Worksbuddy to treat AI visibility less like traditional rank tracking and more like measuring a brand's probability of entering an AI-generated answer.
Consider a company asking ChatGPT:
"What are the best CRM tools for a small business?"
Its brand appears.
But if the same question is run 20 times and the company appears only four times, while one competitor appears 16 times, the two brands clearly do not have equal visibility.
"The industry is very used to asking, 'What position are we in?'" Kumar says. "With generative AI, we believe the more useful question is becoming, 'How consistently are we part of the answer?'"
The USP
Ranko focuses on monitoring the questions that real buyers may ask AI assistants and measuring how frequently a brand appears compared with competitors.
The platform tracks prompts on a schedule and records brand mentions, competitors, AI-generated responses and cited sources.
Instead of giving businesses only one combined number, it can separate performance across different AI engines.
This means a company may discover that it is frequently mentioned by ChatGPT but has significantly lower visibility on Gemini or Perplexity.
Ranko's share-of-voice feature measures a brand's visibility relative to its competitors and tracks how that changes over time.
"A business can look strong on one AI engine and almost invisible on another," Kumar says. "If all of that gets reduced to one screenshot or one score, you miss the actual problem."
Another part of Ranko focuses on the sources behind AI-generated answers.
The platform identifies pages and websites being cited by AI engines, including sources that appear when competitors are mentioned instead of the company's own brand.
That becomes particularly relevant given the academic findings showing substantial differences in the sources presented by ChatGPT and Gemini.
For marketers, the issue is no longer only whether a website has backlinks or ranks for a particular keyword.
It is also becoming important to understand which publications, websites and pages appear to be shaping AI answers in their category.
Ranko also combines this visibility information with traditional keyword research, topic research and content workflows. Worksbuddy positions the product as covering both measurement and the work required after a visibility gap is discovered.
For example, if a company discovers that competitors repeatedly appear for a group of buyer questions while its own brand does not, the platform can identify related topic and citation gaps rather than stopping at the visibility score.
A changing search market
Ranko is entering a fast-growing category broadly referred to as AI visibility, generative engine optimisation (GEO), or answer engine optimisation (AEO).
Platforms including Profound, Peec AI, Otterly, Scrunch AI and AI-visibility products from established SEO companies are competing to help companies understand how they appear inside generative search experiences. Recent industry comparisons show the category spanning everything from relatively inexpensive monitoring tools to enterprise platforms costing hundreds of dollars per month.
Worksbuddy is approaching the category by connecting AI visibility monitoring with content and optimisation workflows.
The company says Ranko captures AI answers as a buyer would see them, compares brands against competitors and tracks multiple AI engines from one dashboard.
The underlying opportunity is being created by a change in consumer behaviour.
A person no longer has to search using a short phrase such as:
"Best CRM."
They can ask:
"I run a 10-person business, receive around 500 inbound leads a month, need automatic follow-ups, and don't want an enterprise CRM. What should I use?"
That longer conversation gives an AI assistant significantly more context about the buyer.
It also creates thousands of potential variations of the questions businesses may need to monitor.
Monetisation and competition
Unlike most of the wider Worksbuddy suite, Ranko is priced around usage rather than employee seats.
Worksbuddy's current pricing lists Ranko from $49 per month, with pricing based on the prompts being monitored across AI search environments.
The model reflects the nature of the product: a company monitoring hundreds of buyer questions across several brands and AI engines consumes more tracking capacity than one monitoring a smaller set.
Ranko competes in a market that already includes specialist platforms such as Profound, Peec AI, Otterly and Scrunch AI, alongside AI-search products offered by larger SEO companies including Semrush and Ahrefs.
Rather than positioning Ranko only as another AI monitoring dashboard, Worksbuddy is betting that businesses will increasingly want a combination of visibility measurement, competitor analysis, citation intelligence and content execution.
Ranko is beginning to see early traction as businesses pay closer attention to how they appear inside AI-generated answers. The platform is currently tracking 100+ brands, monitoring more than 75,000 buyer prompts every month across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and Perplexity.
Worksbuddy says Ranko is being used across 8 markets, with prompt-monitoring volume growing by approximately 32% month-on-month.
The challenge
AI search visibility is still an emerging category, and measuring it presents challenges traditional SEO did not have to address in quite the same way.
AI models change.
Their retrieval systems change.
The sources displayed can change.
And the answers themselves can vary between repeated generations.
The September academic study also found that API results could differ substantially from consumer-facing chatbot interfaces, meaning that simply testing a model through an API may not always reproduce what an ordinary user encounters.
This makes measurement more complicated.
But Worksbuddy believes that complexity is precisely why repeated monitoring will become necessary.
"If the answer changes, that doesn't make measurement useless," Kumar says. "It means the measurement has to account for the fact that the answer changes."
The way ahead
For more than two decades, businesses have built digital visibility strategies around search rankings.
Companies learned which keywords mattered, monitored where they appeared on Google and invested heavily in moving higher.
Generative AI is introducing a different kind of discovery environment.
There may not always be a permanent number-one result.
A buyer might receive one shortlist from ChatGPT and another from Gemini.
And even the same AI assistant may not recommend exactly the same brands every time.
For Worksbuddy, this makes consistency-not a single ranking-the more important metric.
"The goal should not be to take one screenshot showing that ChatGPT mentioned you," Kumar says. "The goal is to become difficult to leave out when buyers repeatedly ask questions your company should be relevant to."
As more buying journeys begin inside conversational AI, companies may therefore find themselves optimising for something different from the position they have spent years chasing on search engines.
Not simply where they rank.
But how often they make the answer at all.
