solid-state-cooling-market

September 23, 2026 - The global solid-state cooling market is projected to grow from USD 0.96 billion in 2025 to USD 2.08 billion by 2033, registering a 10% CAGR during 2026-2033. The market is moving beyond miniature refrigerators and conventional thermoelectric modules. AI optical links, PCR instruments, automotive sensors, laser systems and compact edge-computing devices now require precise cooling at the component level, often in spaces where a compressor, pump or fan creates too much noise, vibration, volume or maintenance exposure.

The strongest opportunities emerge where thermal control protects a high-value function. A few degrees of instability can shift laser wavelength, reduce optical-link reliability, slow PCR cycling or throttle an edge processor. These applications reward temperature precision, response time, lifetime and integration support-not cooling capacity alone.

Cooling subsystems are capturing more value than individual modules

Cooling systems accounted for 67% of 2025 revenue, equal to USD 643.2 million, while solid-state refrigeration systems represented 33%, or USD 316.8 million. Module suppliers remain essential, but the revenue pool is moving toward assemblies that combine a thermoelectric device with heat exchangers, sensors, control electronics, mechanical interfaces and firmware. This reduces design work for the OEM and creates a clearer route from prototype to qualified production.

Single-stage devices held 61% of 2025 revenue, equal to USD 585.6 million. Multi-stage systems represented 25%, or USD 240.0 million, and thermocycler-focused configurations generated 14%, or USD 134.4 million. Single-stage modules lead because they cover broad temperature-control duties at manageable cost. Multi-stage devices earn a premium where the required temperature differential cannot be reached efficiently in one stage. Thermocycler demand is smaller in value but technically demanding because PCR workflows require fast, repeatable heating and cooling across thousands of cycles.

A module's catalog performance is measured under laboratory conditions; enclosure performance depends on the heat sink, interface resistance, condensation control, airflow and power electronics. Suppliers that model and validate the complete thermal path can displace lower-priced modules that leave integration risk with the equipment maker.

Healthcare leads revenue, while AI infrastructure changes the specification

Healthcare generated 29% of 2025 market revenue, equal to USD 278.4 million, supported by PCR systems, diagnostic analyzers, imaging components, medical storage and laboratory instruments. Semiconductor and electronics applications held 27%, or USD 259.2 million. Automotive represented 19%, equal to USD 182.4 million; consumer products contributed 15%, or USD 144.0 million; and other industrial and scientific uses held 10%, or USD 96.0 million.

AI infrastructure is creating a distinct opportunity inside semiconductor and electronics. The issue is not only processor temperature. Optical transceivers are progressing toward 1.6T and 3.2T, while co-packaged optics place lasers and optical engines closer to high-power silicon. These components require localized, stable thermal control. Phononic is positioning solid-state devices around EML and CW lasers, external laser sources and optical engines rather than attempting to replace an entire data-center cooling plant.

Fanless edge computing is opening another route. Solid-state active air cooling can sustain processor performance inside thin, sealed or dust-resistant products where mechanical fans are unacceptable. Frore Systems' AirJet Mini G2 removes 7.5 W of heat, a 50% increase over its first generation, in a component measuring 2.65 mm thick. The commercial hurdle is system cost: the cooling technology must unlock enough compute performance, device thinness or environmental protection to justify replacing a low-cost fan.

Asia-Pacific combines manufacturing scale with the fastest design cycle

Asia-Pacific held 38% of 2025 revenue, equal to USD 364.8 million, making it the largest regional market. China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan combine thermoelectric-material production with electronics, semiconductor, automotive and medical-device manufacturing. Local engineering access matters because module dimensions, ceramic selection, solder construction and control parameters are often customized during product design.

North America represented 31%, or USD 297.6 million, supported by diagnostic platforms, photonics, aerospace, AI infrastructure and solid-state cooling start-ups. The region is commercially important for new architectures that move cooling directly onto optical or computing components. Europe held 22%, equal to USD 211.2 million, with demand across automotive electronics, laboratory equipment, industrial lasers and research into caloric cooling. Latin America accounted for 5%, or USD 48.0 million, while the Middle East and Africa held 4%, equal to USD 38.4 million.

Recent Developments

September 2026: Frore Systems and Lenovo unveiled the AeroBlade concept, described as the first ultra-slim, ultra-quiet notebook using AirJet solid-state active cooling. The program moves the technology from development kits toward an identifiable PC platform.

September 2026: Same Sky expanded its thermoelectric generator range with modules delivering up to 27.3 W electrical output and accepting heat flow up to 525 W. Although the products harvest heat rather than provide cooling, the launch expands the thermoelectric component ecosystem and available package sizes.

August 2026: Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the University of Tsukuba reported a heat-driven elastocaloric prototype using two nickel-titanium films. The device achieved a 4°C component-level temperature difference and operated with an external heat source at 130°C, proving that waste heat can drive solid-state cooling without an electric motor.

June 2026: YPlasma presented fanless solid-state cooling for NVIDIA Jetson at COMPUTEX, targeting embedded AI installations where dust, acoustics and mechanical fan failure restrict deployment.

May 2026: Frore Systems announced collaboration with Lenovo's Innovation Accelerator. The AirJet Mini G2 platform offers 1,750 Pa back pressure at 21 dBA, creating a route to sealed, thin AI devices that can sustain compute loads without a conventional fan.

Company profiles

Ferrotec Holdings Corporation supplies general-purpose, deep-cooling, thermal-cycling, telecom-grade and high-power thermoelectric modules, as well as controllers and complete assemblies. Its product range extends from mini-modules measuring 2.3 mm by 3.3 mm to high-power devices rated up to 36 A. Ferrotec's advantage is manufacturability across semiconductor, biomedical, automotive and instrumentation volumes; its challenge is protecting margins as standard single-stage modules face Asian price competition.

Laird Thermal Systems competes through thermoelectric modules, liquid-cooling systems and application engineering. Its UltraTEC line is designed for high heat-pumping density in limited surface area, addressing analytical instruments, clinical diagnostics, photonics, enclosures and chillers. Laird's commercial position rests on translating module performance into qualified assemblies. Reliability, sealing choice and thermal-interface design are more defensible than the bismuth-telluride module alone.

Phononic develops solid-state cooling chips and thermal control systems for cold-chain, climate-control and data-center applications. Its AI strategy focuses on temperature-sensitive optical components and localized GPU/HBM thermal control. As a privately held company, it does not publish a separate 2025 product-revenue figure. Its competitive test is whether high-volume manufacturing and customer-specific integration can convert data-center design wins into repeatable module shipments.

Frore Systems has expanded the definition of solid-state cooling beyond the Peltier effect through piezoelectric AirJet devices. AirJet Mini G2 targets PCs and edge equipment, while the PAK range bundles modules for NVIDIA, AMD and Qualcomm platforms. The Lenovo collaboration provides an OEM commercialization path. Frore is privately held and does not disclose 2025 revenue, making customer adoption and shipping products more useful progress indicators than corporate sales.

The market's 10% CAGR will not be distributed evenly. Commodity modules will face pricing pressure, while application-qualified subsystems can capture higher value. The most attractive programs are those in which cooling determines assay speed, optical integrity, compute throughput, enclosure sealing or equipment life-and where the supplier can prove that advantage under the final operating conditions.
