Seeing Risk and Managing Risk Are Not the Same Thing, Says Erwood Group's Keith Erwood

OVIEDO, FL - Sept. 21, 2026 - Seeing risk and managing risk are not the same thing, according to business continuity expert Keith Erwood. Many organizations believe they are managing risk when they are mostly identifying it, discussing it and documenting it. As Erwood frames it, "Seeing risk is awareness. Managing risk is action" - recognizing that something could go wrong is not the same as having done something meaningful about it. Awareness matters and is better than being blind, Erwood said, but awareness alone does not reduce exposure, improve recoverability or strengthen decision-making during a disruption. Risk is managed only when an organization takes disciplined steps to reduce, prepare for, transfer, monitor or intentionally accept that exposure with clarity - a much higher standard. It is why businesses still get surprised by events they already knew were possible: they saw the issue but did not truly manage it.

The common failure, Erwood said, is confusing conversation with control. Teams talk about, review, acknowledge and document a risk, but do not assign ownership, make a decision, invest in mitigation, build a workaround or test recovery - so the exposure simply remains. "Awareness may explain the problem. It does not solve the problem," he said.

Managing risk is ultimately about decisions, according to Erwood: what to reduce, what to prepare for, what to tolerate, what to strengthen and which assumptions are too dangerous to leave untested. He also drew a sharp line between intentional acceptance and passive neglect. "Passive neglect says we know about it, but we have not dealt with it," he said, while intentional acceptance means leadership understands the consequence, the likelihood and the trade-off and deliberately chooses its position for now.

Erwood's leadership takeaway distilled the distinction: "Seeing risk improves awareness. Managing risk improves readiness," he said - one helps a business recognize exposure, the other reduces its power over the organization, a difference that becomes visible quickly when disruption arrives.
