AI Is Changing Web Search: New Free WordPress Plugin Prepares Websites for AI Systems

LLMS.txt for WordPress: Free plugin structures website content for artificial intelligence ( (C) M. Schall Verlag)
One possible answer is the relatively new LLMS.txt format. It is designed to provide AI systems with a compact and clearly structured overview of a website's most important content. Software developer and publisher Markus Schall has thoroughly explored this new approach and is now offering _"Schall LLMS.txt"_, a free WordPress plugin that automatically generates and keeps such an overview up to date.
From Search Engines to AI Assistants
This fundamental shift is already evident in everyday life. While a traditional search engine lists relevant websites and leaves the choice up to the user, modern AI systems often formulate an answer immediately. To do this, they must find information, categorize it, and establish connections between different pieces of information.
For website operators, this development does not mean that traditional search engine optimization (SEO) is becoming obsolete. Good content, a clean technical structure, fast loading times, and clear headings remain important. However, this raises the additional question of how to structure extensive bodies of knowledge so that they can be accessed as easily as possible by automated systems.
Corporate blogs, online magazines, technical documentation, and knowledge databases, in particular, can grow to several hundred or even thousands of pages over the years. For a human visitor, navigation, design, and context usually make it easy to quickly identify which content is particularly relevant. An automated system, on the other hand, must first uncover these connections.
LLMS.txt as a Guide Through Extensive Websites
This is where LLMS.txt comes in. The format was developed in 2024 as an open proposal and is intended as an additional orientation aid for large language models. Put simply, an LLMS.txt file can be compared to a table of contents or a knowledge map: it describes what a website is about and specifically points to important content and topic areas.
A classic XML sitemap is primarily designed to help search engines find existing pages. The robots.txt file, on the other hand, contains instructions for automated crawlers. LLMS.txt takes a different approach. The file is not intended to simply list as many URLs as possible, but rather to clearly present the core content of a website.
However, caution is advised: LLMS.txt is not currently an official internet standard, and there is no solid evidence to date that the existence of such a file automatically results in better search engine rankings, more visitors, or more frequent mentions in AI responses. Even the major AI providers have not yet disclosed in detail to what extent they take LLMS.txt into account.
Precisely for this reason, Schall does not view this approach as a new SEO trick, but rather as a straightforward way to prepare for a potential future development of the internet.
Free WordPress Plugin Handles Ongoing Maintenance
In principle, an LLMS.txt file can be created using a standard text editor. This is certainly feasible for a small website. It becomes more difficult, however, for regularly updated corporate websites, magazines, or knowledge portals. New posts appear, older articles are revised, and new topic areas are added. A manually maintained file can quickly become outdated as a result.
The free WordPress plugin "Schall LLMS.txt" automates this process. After installation, WordPress makes the LLMS.txt file available directly under the respective domain. The content is generated dynamically, so new and updated posts can be automatically included. There's no need to manually maintain an additional static file in the web directory.
Website operators can specify titles and descriptions, add their own introduction, and determine which content should be included. Categories can be included, as can important pages and selected content that should be permanently highlighted.
This makes the plugin particularly well-suited for websites whose value stems less from a few product pages than from a body of expertise that has grown over time.
Deliberately Not a New, Complicated SEO Tool
During development, the decision was made not to turn the plugin into a comprehensive SEO suite with numerous additional features. "Schall LLMS.txt" is designed to perform a clearly defined task: providing an up-to-date, clearly structured LLMS.txt file for a WordPress website.
The plugin is offered free of charge as open source without support and can be used on both personal and commercial WordPress websites. This allows companies to try out the new format without license fees and gain their own experience with it.
This approach is also interesting because it is not yet possible to definitively assess the long-term significance of LLMS.txt. Should the format become established or evolve further, corresponding adjustments can be made via the plugin in the future. If, on the other hand, it remains only an intermediate step on the path to other standards, the effort required of website operators will be manageable.
Particularly interesting for companies with their own expertise
The growing importance of artificial intelligence could also change, in the long term, the value that companies place on their own editorial content. Technical articles, guides, documentation, glossaries, and detailed answers to typical customer questions are not only of interest to traditional search engines. They also form a structured knowledge base that automated systems can generally draw upon.
This is especially true for small and medium-sized businesses with specialized expertise. It is precisely in these companies that experience and solutions to problems often exist that are documented in detail in only a few places on the internet.
LLMS.txt can be one way to better organize such content and highlight its importance within a website. However, it is no substitute for high-quality content or a well-thought-out website structure. An empty or content-poor website does not become more valuable simply by having an LLMS.txt file.
Part of a More Comprehensive Magazine Strategy
The plugin was initially developed for use on our own websites. In addition, the technology is also being integrated into the magazine system developed by Markus Schall for companies, self-employed individuals, and publishers. This system combines editorial content with multilingual publishing and the long-term development of a company's own digital reach. The automatic LLMS.txt file complements this approach by providing an additional way to make extensive content available in a structured format for automated systems.
The M. Schall Verlag magazine itself is now published in eleven languages and covers topics such as business, digitalization, artificial intelligence, and software. The detailed introductory article on LLMS.txt explains to even technically less experienced website operators how the format works, what its limitations are, and why it can still be interesting despite its ongoing development.
Preparation Instead of Promises
A level-headed assessment is crucial here. No one can currently make a credible promise that an LLMS.txt file will automatically lead to being mentioned more frequently in responses from ChatGPT, Gemini, or other AI systems. Nor is it yet certain whether LLMS.txt will become as commonplace in a few years as robots.txt, XML sitemaps, or structured data.
However, the effort required to prepare a website for this is minimal. For WordPress users, this step can be implemented in just a few minutes using the free plugin. After that, ongoing updates occur largely automatically.

In doing so, "Schall LLMS.txt" follows a pragmatic principle: New technologies don't have to come with grand promises to be worth a practical try. Anyone who already publishes extensive, high-quality content can, with little additional effort, structure it in such a way that future AI systems will also have clearer access to the existing body of knowledge.

Frequently Asked Questions
* What is an LLMS.txt, and why does my website need this file?
An LLMS.txt is a relatively new way to provide AI systems with a structured overview of a website's key content. In simple terms, you can think of it as a table of contents specifically formatted for large language models. Instead of simply presenting an AI system with a large number of individual web pages, it allows you to specifically highlight important topics, articles, and pages. However, it is not yet entirely clear whether--and to what extent--major AI providers already take LLMS.txt files into account. The format should therefore be viewed as an additional step in preparing for the growing importance of AI-powered information systems, rather than as a guarantee of increased visibility.
* Does an LLMS.txt replace traditional search engine optimization or an XML sitemap?
No. An LLMS.txt is not a substitute for traditional search engine optimization, XML sitemaps, or a technically well-structured website. These different methods serve different purposes. A sitemap helps search engines, in particular, discover existing pages and their URLs. An LLMS.txt, on the other hand, is intended to convey a website's content structure and particularly relevant information more effectively. Good content, meaningful headings, internal links, and a sound technical structure therefore remain important.
* Why should I use a WordPress plugin for LLMS.txt if I can create the file manually?
For a small website with just a few static pages, a manually created LLMS.txt file may be perfectly sufficient. However, for a regularly updated corporate blog, magazine, or knowledge portal, this quickly leads to additional maintenance work. New articles are added, others are revised, and areas of focus change. The plugin automates this work and dynamically generates the LLMS.txt file from the existing WordPress content. This means you don't have to remember to edit a static file and upload it to the server again after every publication.
* Is the WordPress plugin really free, or will there be a paid Pro version later on?
The plugin is provided free of charge and is intentionally designed as a streamlined tool for a clearly defined task. It is not intended to be an artificially limited basic version in which important features are only unlocked through a paid upgrade. Likewise, we've avoided disruptive ads and constant prompts for additional products. This makes it easy to try out the plugin and use it on suitable WordPress websites. It's provided as open-source software without individual support.
* Can an LLMS.txt ensure that my company is mentioned more frequently in ChatGPT, Gemini, or other AI systems?
Such a guarantee would be unsound. Currently, there is no reliable basis for the promise that an LLMS.txt will automatically lead to more frequent mentions in AI responses. Furthermore, the major providers do not fully disclose which sources and technical signals are taken into account when generating their responses. The practical idea behind LLMS.txt is therefore, first and foremost, to make existing content clearer and more understandable for automated systems. Should the format be given greater consideration in the future, a website prepared accordingly will already be ready for it.
* For which WordPress websites is an LLMS.txt particularly useful?
The concept is particularly useful for websites with extensive editorial or technical content. These include, for example, corporate magazines, blogs, technical documentation, knowledge portals, and websites run by specialists who have published numerous technical articles over the years. Especially with such sites, it can be difficult for an automated system to identify--without additional guidance--which content forms the core of the existing knowledge base. For a small website with five or ten largely static pages, the potential benefit is naturally more limited.
* Why is this topic becoming relevant for businesses right now?
The way people search for information is changing. Many users no longer search exclusively via traditional search engines but instead ask questions directly to AI assistants. At the same time, search engines are increasingly integrating automatically generated answers into their results. For businesses, this means that alongside the classic question "How can I be found on Google?" a second question is increasingly arising: "How can an AI system understand my content and categorize it correctly?" It is not yet clear which technical standards will prevail in the long term. However, it makes sense to monitor this development early on and be prepared for it with a manageable amount of effort.
* What sets this free plugin apart from comprehensive SEO or AI marketing solutions?
The plugin deliberately takes a much narrower approach. It promises neither better Google rankings nor preferential treatment from AI providers. Its purpose is to generate a structured LLMS.txt file from existing WordPress content and to largely automate its ongoing maintenance. Website operators thus retain control over their content and do not need to install a comprehensive marketing or SEO platform just for this single task. The approach is not to pack as many features as possible into yet another WordPress plugin, but rather to solve a specific technical task as simply as possible.
