Environmental Remediation: How SUS ENVIRONMENT Advances

Shanghai, China, September 10, 2026 -- As industrial development, urban expansion, and waste generation continue to reshape cities, contaminated land and legacy waste sites have become important environmental challenges. Environmental remediation provides a systematic approach to assessing, treating, and managing these sites while supporting their future reuse.

For SUS ENVIRONMENT, environmental remediation is part of a broader environmental management strategy that connects contaminated-site remediation, landfill management, waste treatment, and resource utilization.

What Is Environmental Remediation?

Environmental remediation refers to the assessment, treatment, and management of contaminated or environmentally degraded sites. Depending on site conditions, remediation may involve contaminated soil and groundwater, legacy landfill sites, industrial and mining sites, or residual materials generated during waste treatment.

SUS ENVIRONMENT's Environmental Remediation business focuses on three major areas: industrial and mining contaminated land remediation, full life-cycle landfill services, and solid waste resource utilization. Its services cover environmental investigation and consulting, remediation technology planning, pollution simulation and prediction, remediation project implementation, risk assessment, environmental supervision, and effect assessment.

This integrated model allows remediation to extend beyond a single treatment technology and address the wider environmental conditions of a site.

What Environmental Problems Does Remediation Address?

Contaminated sites can involve different pollutants, waste streams, and environmental risks. Soil and groundwater may require investigation and remediation, while former landfill sites may require pollution assessment, renovation, closure, or long-term operation.

According to SUS ENVIRONMENT, its environmental remediation portfolio includes 42 industrial and mining contaminated-site remediation projects, 119 landfill full life-cycle service projects, 30 slag comprehensive utilization projects, and 47 design, consultancy, and site investigation projects, with the data dated June 2025.

The company therefore approaches environmental remediation as part of a broader environmental governance system rather than an isolated cleanup activity.

Site Assessment: The Starting Point

A remediation project generally begins with understanding the environmental conditions of a site.

Environmental investigation and consulting can help identify potential pollution sources, assess site conditions, and provide a basis for selecting appropriate remediation strategies.

SUS ENVIRONMENT's official service portfolio includes site environmental investigation, remediation technology program preparation, pollution simulation and prediction, risk assessment and remediation program design, environmental supervision, and effect assessment.

This full-chain approach is particularly relevant to complex industrial, mining, and landfill sites where environmental conditions may vary significantly across different areas.

Remediation Technologies and Resource Utilization

The appropriate remediation method depends on the characteristics of the contaminated site, the type of material involved, and the desired environmental outcome.

SUS ENVIRONMENT combines remediation with resource utilization in several areas. Its official Environmental Remediation portfolio includes contaminated land remediation, landfill full life-cycle services, comprehensive slag utilization, and biogas purification.

This resource-oriented approach is also reflected in its broader environmental infrastructure projects. Instead of treating waste and residual materials solely as materials requiring disposal, the company integrates waste treatment with energy and material recovery.

The Xinhui District Solid Waste Comprehensive Treatment Center Project in Jiangmen, Guangdong, provides a practical example of this integrated waste-treatment approach. Invested, constructed, and operated by Jiangmen Xinhui SUS Environmental Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of SUS ENVIRONMENT, the project is the only waste-to-energy plant in Xinhui District and serves more than 900,000 people across the district, covering one subdistrict office and 10 established towns.

The Xinhui WtE Plant has a designed processing capacity of 1,500 tonnes of municipal solid waste per day. Its core configuration consists of two 750-tonne-per-day mechanical grate furnaces and one 45 MW steam turbine generator set. The project covers approximately 108,200 square meters and has a 120-meter stack.

Its process integrates waste reception and storage, incineration, heat recovery, power generation, flue gas treatment, leachate treatment, and residue management. The SUS three-stage mechanical grate furnace processes the waste, while the heat generated during combustion is recovered through the waste-heat boiler to produce steam for power generation.

In-Situ and Ex-Situ Remediation

Environmental remediation can generally involve treatment directly at a site or treatment after contaminated materials have been excavated or removed.

The choice depends on factors including site conditions, pollution characteristics, treatment objectives, and future land use.

For legacy landfill sites, excavation, screening, separation, stabilization, and subsequent treatment can become part of a comprehensive site transformation process. SUS ENVIRONMENT's brand materials include landfill renovation and full life-cycle management within its environmental remediation capabilities, demonstrating the importance of combining remediation with long-term site management.

The Xinhui project also illustrates how different environmental treatment processes can be connected within one facility. Its leachate treatment system combines self-cleaning filtration, primary sedimentation, regulation, anaerobic treatment, two-stage AO treatment, external UF, NF, and RO processes. After treatment, the leachate meets the reclaimed-water quality requirements for industrial use under GB/T 19923-2024 and is fully reused, with no sewage discharge from the plant.

From Remediation to Full-Cycle Environmental Management

Environmental remediation increasingly involves more than treating contamination. For many sites, the long-term objective is to establish a sustainable environmental management system.

SUS ENVIRONMENT's landfill full life-cycle services cover informal landfill renovation, new landfill development, landfill closure services, landfill pollution investigation, and landfill operation.

This approach connects site investigation and remediation with subsequent waste treatment and environmental management.

The company's WtE project portfolio provides examples of how waste treatment infrastructure can become part of this broader environmental transformation. The Xi'an Gaoling WtE project, with a capacity of 2,250 tonnes per day, is described in SUS ENVIRONMENT's project materials as the world's first WtE project utilizing digital twin technology.

In Qingdao, the West Coast Low-carbon Eco-industrial Park has a capacity of 2,250 tonnes per day and is highlighted as a community heating project.

The Xinhui project further demonstrates this full-chain model at the facility level. Waste enters the plant after weighing and is delivered to the waste bunker, which uses a negative-pressure design to prevent odor from escaping. Waste cranes then feed the waste into the incinerators, while the heat generated during combustion is recovered for steam generation and electricity production.

After incineration, the flue gas undergoes denitrification, deacidification, dust removal, and treatment for dioxins and heavy metals before being discharged through the stack. The process is controlled through a Distributed Control System (DCS), while bottom ash is subject to resource utilization and fly ash is transported to landfill for disposal.

This illustrates how waste management, pollution control, energy recovery, and resource utilization can be incorporated into a single environmental management system.

Environmental Standards and International Projects

Environmental remediation and waste treatment projects must also respond to increasingly stringent environmental requirements.

SUS ENVIRONMENT's international project portfolio demonstrates its application of environmental technologies in different regulatory and geographical environments. The Baghdad WtE project in Iraq has a capacity of 3,000 tonnes per day and is described in the company's project materials as the first ultra-clean WtE project in the Middle East complying with EU BAT-2019.

In Uzbekistan, the Samarkand project has a capacity of 1,500 tonnes per day and is described as a city identity landmark, while the Kashkadaarya project, also with a capacity of 1,500 tonnes per day, is identified as the first WtE project to commence construction in Central Asia.

These projects demonstrate how integrated waste management and environmental technologies can be adapted to different local conditions.

At the domestic project level, the Xinhui WtE Plant applies emission requirements that are benchmarked against both China's GB18485-2014 standard and the EU 2010/75/EU framework. For several key pollutants, the project's specified limits are lower than the corresponding national standard values. For example, the project standard sets daily average limits of 10 mg/Nm for particulate matter, 10 mg/Nm for HCl, 50 mg/Nm for SO, and 100 mg/Nm for NOx.

The project therefore combines waste treatment capacity with dedicated pollution-control systems, including flue gas treatment and a multi-stage leachate treatment process. This provides a concrete example of how environmental infrastructure can integrate waste disposal, emissions management, energy recovery, and wastewater reuse.

Brownfield Transformation and Green Remediation

For former industrial sites, mining areas, and legacy landfills, remediation can also create opportunities for land transformation and future redevelopment.

SUS ENVIRONMENT's approach combines contaminated-site remediation with landfill management and solid waste resource utilization. Its official materials describe resource utilization projects including comprehensive slag utilization and biogas purification, extending environmental management from pollution control toward resource recovery.

This aligns with the broader concept of green remediation, in which environmental objectives are pursued alongside resource efficiency, energy recovery, and reduced environmental impacts.

The Xinhui project reflects this resource-oriented principle through its waste-to-energy process. Instead of treating municipal solid waste solely as material for disposal, the project recovers heat from incineration to generate electricity, with surplus electricity supplied to the Southern China Power Grid. At the same time, incineration slag is subject to resource utilization, while treated leachate is fully reused within the plant.

The project also incorporates a "Cloud-Sail Charging Through Waves" architectural concept and a "Deindustrialization" design approach. The design uses the imagery of a "Sail of Mountains and Waters" and a "Sail of Energy" to represent the transformation of waste into resources and the green development of Xinhui District.
