COLD CASE: A New York Daughter, Murdered in Jamaica and Mother Who Won't Let Go
Andrea Gibbon saves everything.Photographs. Messages. Newspaper clippings. Names written down years ago. Details from conversations that seemed unimportant at the time and now refuse to go away.
Nearly nine years have passed since her daughter, Desiree Gibbon, was found dead along a rural road outside Montego Bay, Jamaica. No arrest has been publicly announced. No one has been convicted.
The investigation has stalled, at least from the family's view. Andrea has not.
She has built her own archive of the case, a collection that includes confirmed evidence, secondhand accounts, unverified tips and the memories of people who knew Desiree before she became the victim in an international murder mystery.
Some of it may matter. Some of it may lead nowhere.
Andrea believes all of it should be examined. Her 26-year-old Queens filmmaker daughter was found with her throat cut days before she was scheduled to return home but Andrea Gibbon has not stopped collecting names, messages and clues.
She was building a life in several directions
Desiree Hyacinth Gibbon was 26 years old when she died.
She grew up in Hollis, Queens, and graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in broadcast journalism. She had modeled and acted, but her larger ambition was filmmaking. She wanted to make documentaries and hoped to attend film school in Europe.
Her life did not move in a straight line. Film led to music. Modeling led to recording studios. New York introduced her to artists, performers and people trying to build careers on the edges of the entertainment industry.
Andrea says Desiree had spent time around recording sessions and industry gatherings. She has photographs of her daughter with A$AP Rocky and French Montana. She also says Desiree had attended a dinner connected to the New York music scene.
Those photographs do not explain what happened in Jamaica. They do something more basic.
They show a young woman moving through a world she hoped to join.
On Thanksgiving Day in 2017, Andrea says Desiree spoke with a friend about plans for a new record label. During the conversation, they discussed the possibility of Desiree scouting Jamaican performers who might eventually be signed.
It was a credible direction for her. Desiree knew Jamaica, had family roots there and had visited the island before. She was not traveling as a stranger who had wandered away from a resort.
She arrived in Montego Bay on Oct. 20, 2017, and stayed at Gibbs Chateau, a small hotel owned by her grandmother. She was helping at the property while trying to earn money for her next move.
She was scheduled to return to New York within days.
The last walk away from the hotel
Desiree spent Thanksgiving with relatives at Gibbs Chateau.
Later that evening, she left the property wearing shorts and bright pink flip-flops. She carried her phone and room key. According to the family's account, she told a security guard she would return.
Then she walked beyond the range of the hotel cameras.
Her body was discovered on Nov. 25, 2017, in bushes near the Long Hill main road in St. James Parish. Her throat had been cut.
The location was miles from the hotel.
Early reports indicated that investigators were looking for a man known by the nickname Rasta. Police also explored whether Desiree had met someone she trusted during her stay.
No public arrest followed.
By 2020, Jamaican investigators said they had collected 14 witness statements and obtained DNA samples from six people described as persons of interest or individuals close to Desiree. None of those samples matched the unidentified DNA recovered from her body.
Investigators had also reviewed surveillance footage and information from her phones.
Still nothing.
The forensic evidence left behind another question.
According to the family and earlier news reports, DNA from both a male and a female was found on Desiree's body.
Andrea says she was also told that the wounds indicated the killer may have been left-handed. That detail has not been confirmed in the public police statements available about the investigation. It remains part of the information she has gathered and wants authorities to revisit.
A single detail can take over an unsolved case.
Left-handed. Male DNA. Female DNA. A nickname. A missing stretch of time.
None of those pieces has been enough.
The people Desiree knew
Andrea has spent years trying to reconstruct her daughter's final weeks.
She has asked friends who Desiree met, where she went and what she said. She has studied photographs and tried to identify people who may have crossed paths with her.
The information is not always consistent.
Andrea says Desiree knew a Jamaican tennis player and had spent time with him. The two planned to meet again, according to the information she received. Andrea also says the man was left-handed and was reportedly in Miami when Desiree was killed.
No publicly available police statement reviewed in connection with the case identifies the man as a suspect or connects him to the killing.
That distinction matters.
Knowing Desiree is not evidence of harming her. Being left-handed is not proof. An alleged alibi is not meaningful without confirmation from investigators.
For Andrea, however, the unanswered questions remain part of the larger frustration. She does not know which people were fully investigated, which alibis were confirmed or whether every useful DNA comparison was completed.
The silence around the case has created room for suspicion.
It has not created proof.
A message arrived from Canada
In August 2020, one of Desiree's friends received a message through a blog.
The sender identified herself as Lensa and said she had left Jamaica for Canada. She made a far more serious claim. She said she knew who killed Desiree.
According to Andrea, the woman directed the family toward a man Desiree may have met in Jamaica. Andrea later sent his photograph to one of Desiree's friends. The friend said Desiree had gone to the movies with him.
The message included other claims involving a Jamaican newspaper report about two people found dead in a burned vehicle. Some of what the woman said conflicted with published accounts of that case.
The spelling of the man's name was also unclear.
No public police statement has confirmed that the tip produced evidence in Desiree's murder. No publicly available record identifies the man as her killer.
Andrea does not claim the message solved the case.
She believes it should have triggered a harder look.
That has become the pattern. A person comes forward. A photograph is recognized. A name connects to a memory. Then the trail thins out.
A mother is left trying to determine whether the information was disproven, investigated or simply filed away.
A murder divided by borders
Desiree was an American citizen. She was killed in Jamaica.
That fact has shaped nearly every step that followed.
Andrea appealed for help from the FBI and other American authorities. She was told that the United States could not simply take control of a homicide investigation inside another country. Jamaica would have to request that assistance.
The family later hired a private investigator. Andrea traveled back to Jamaica and planted a tree near the place where Desiree's body was found. She contacted public officials, spoke to reporters and continued asking people in Montego Bay to come forward.
Jamaican police said in 2020 that the investigation remained active.
To the family, active is not the same as moving.
Andrea has also discussed pursuing legislation that would provide more help to American families when a loved one is murdered overseas. Such families can find themselves caught between governments, police agencies and legal systems that were not designed to give them a central role.
Years pass quickly inside that kind of bureaucracy.
Evidence does not improve with age. Witnesses move. Memories change. People die.
The family keeps waiting.
Before she became a case
Desiree Gibbon is now frequently introduced through the facts of her death.
Queens woman. Murdered in Jamaica. Throat cut. Case unsolved.
Andrea remembers the rest.
Desiree wanted to make films. She moved comfortably between cultures and was curious about people whose lives were different from her own. She had ideas about Europe, music and documentary work. She was trying things. Some of them might have worked. Others probably would not have.
She was 26. There was time to find out.
That is the future Andrea believes was stolen, not only from Desiree but from everyone who expected her to return home after Thanksgiving.
Instead, her mother has spent nearly nine years studying fragments.
The unidentified DNA remains. The names remain. The tip from Canada remains. So does the final walk away from Gibbs Chateau, when Desiree carried almost nothing because she apparently believed she would be back soon.
Andrea believes someone in Montego Bay knows what happened after that.
She has said it from the beginning.
Nearly nine years later, she is still waiting for that person to speak.

Maintaining Consistency In Research With High-Quality Bacteriostatic Water
Consistency is one of the foundations of reliable laboratory research. Researchers often repeat procedures, compare samples, and evaluate results across multiple stages of a project. Even small variations in materials, handling practices, or environmental conditions can introduce variables that make results more difficult to interpret. For this reason, laboratories pay close attention to the quality and uniformity of the supplies incorporated into their workflows.
Bacteriostatic water is one such laboratory supply…

How to create content plans for enterprise SEO
Content planning can look deceptively simple from the outside. Build a calendar, assign some keywords and start commissioning - job done! At enterprise level, though, that model tends to fall apart fairly quickly.
While a smaller company might have just one marketing team, a few subject specialists and a website that is relatively easy to keep track of, an enterprise can be dealing with several brands, product lines, markets and departments…
