Which Switch Turns Off When Released? - A Guide to Momentary Push Button Switches

YUEQING, ZHEJIANG, CHINA - August 30, 2026 - When you press a button to start a machine, trigger a control function, or operate equipment, you may want the device to stop immediately once you release your hand. In this situation, a momentary push button switch is the ideal solution.A momentary push button switch only remains active while the button is being pressed. Once the operator releases the button, the switch automatically returns to its original position and disconnects the circuit (returning to its normal electrical state). These switches are widely used in industrial equipment, control panels, power tools, and any application that requires temporary control.If you are wondering "Which switch turns off when released?", the answer is usually a momentary push button switch, especially a normally open (NO) type momentary switch.

What Is a Momentary Push Button Switch?

A momentary push button switch [https://onpowbutton.com/metal-push-button-switch/] is a type of control switch that only activates while external pressure is applied. Unlike a latching push button switch, which stays in its switched position after being pressed, a momentary switch automatically returns to its original state when the pressing force is removed.The working process is simple: Press the button right Circuit is connected and activatedRelease the button right Circuit returns to its original stateThis simple operating principle makes momentary switches ideal for applications that require short-term control without continuous operation

Common applications include:

* Machine start buttons
* Doorbell buttons
* Power tool trigger switches
* Industrial control panels
* Reset buttons
* Testing switches
* Safety control systems

Which Type of Switch Turns Off When Released?

The most common switch that turns off after release is a normally open momentary push button switch (NO).In its normal state, the contacts remain open and the circuit is disconnected. When the button is pressed, the contacts close and allow current to flow. Once the button is released, the contacts automatically open again.Operating sequence:Button released right Circuit disconnectedButton pressed right Circuit connectedButton released again right Circuit returns to open stateThis type of switch is especially suitable for equipment that should only operate while the operator is actively pressing the button, providing both convenience and safety.

Momentary Push Button Switch vs Latching Push Button Switch

Many buyers confuse these two types of buttons because they may have similar appearances, but their operating methods are completely different.

Comparison
Momentary Push Button Switch
Latching Push Button Switch

Working method
Works only while pressed
Maintains the switched position after pressing

After release
Automatically resets
Keeps the ON/OFF status

Operator action
Requires continuous pressing
One press changes the state

Typical applications
Start buttons, reset controls, temporary signals
Equipment power ON/OFF control

For example, a machine start button usually uses a momentary push button switch because the operator only needs to send a temporary control signal. However, a main power switch often uses a latching switch because the equipment needs to remain powered after activation.
