Daniel Ruhl Calls for Greater Focus on Injury Prevention and Lifelong Movement
Oklahoma physical therapist Daniel Ruhl is encouraging people to take simple, consistent steps to protect their mobility and reduce preventable injuries before they become long-term problems.TULSA, Okla. - August 26, 2026 - Physical therapist Daniel Ruhl is encouraging individuals, families, athletes, and older adults to make movement, injury prevention, and patient education a higher priority as musculoskeletal injuries continue to affect millions of Americans each year.
After spending his career helping patients recover from sports injuries, joint replacements, chronic pain, and balance disorders, Ruhl believes many injuries can be reduced through better education, regular physical activity, and small daily habits.
"One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that people don't have to wait until they're injured to take care of themselves," said Ruhl. "Movement is medicine when it's prescribed appropriately. Small, consistent habits today can make a tremendous difference years from now."
Musculoskeletal conditions remain one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 1.71 billion people live with musculoskeletal conditions, making them the leading contributor to disability across the globe. Back pain alone is the single largest cause of disability worldwide.
In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that one in four adults aged 65 and older experiences a fall each year, with falls remaining a leading cause of injury among older adults. Meanwhile, millions of sports and recreation-related injuries occur annually, many of which can be reduced through proper conditioning, strength training, and injury prevention strategies.
Ruhl says education is one of the most effective tools available to improve long-term outcomes.
"Patients deserve to understand what's happening in their bodies," he said. "When people understand why they're doing an exercise instead of simply following instructions, they're much more likely to stay engaged and see lasting results."
Throughout his career in outpatient orthopedic rehabilitation, Ruhl has worked with everyone from high school athletes recovering from ACL injuries to retirees rebuilding mobility after joint replacement surgery. While every patient has different goals, he says the path to recovery often begins with listening.
"For one person, success might mean getting back on the baseball field," Ruhl said. "For another, it's being able to walk comfortably or play with grandchildren again. Every goal matters because every person's life is different."
Beyond treating patients, Ruhl has dedicated time to mentoring Doctor of Physical Therapy students, leading community injury screenings, participating in senior fall-prevention workshops, and speaking at wellness events throughout Oklahoma. He believes healthcare professionals also have a responsibility to educate their communities before injuries occur.
"I'd rather help someone prevent an injury than spend months helping them recover from one," he said. "Prevention isn't always complicated. Often it's about moving more, improving balance and strength, and paying attention before small problems become bigger ones."
Ruhl also encourages people to view physical activity as something that should continue throughout life rather than ending after organized sports or early adulthood.
"We don't stop needing movement as we get older," he said. "In many ways, we need it even more. Staying active helps protect independence, confidence, and overall quality of life."
A Call to Action
Daniel Ruhl encourages individuals to take practical steps to protect their long-term mobility:
*
Stay physically active with regular movement appropriate for your age and ability.
*
Build strength, balance, and flexibility through consistent exercise.
*
Don't ignore persistent pain or repeated injuries.
*
Learn proper movement techniques before starting new fitness activities.
*
Ask healthcare professionals questions so you understand your recovery plan.
*
Focus on building healthy habits instead of looking for quick fixes.
"Recovery works best when patients and healthcare providers become partners," Ruhl said. "The goal isn't just feeling better today. It's staying healthy enough to enjoy the things that matter most for years to come."
